Borderlands 4 Gets Official Release Date as New Trailer Debuts Double Jump and Action Skills Galore

The lead-up to the release of Borderlands 4 has been rife with release date speculation, feature wish lists, and no shortage of complaints about visuals and character design. Today, however, at PlayStation State of Play, Take Two released a new trailer for Borderlands 4 and finally confirmed a September 23 release date for the upcoming looter shooter.

As is to be expected from any trailer dropping months ahead of the official game launch, gameplay details are slyly hinted at instead of directly advertised, but there is a lot of information hidden in the latest Borderlands 4 trailer. For starters, the trailer confirmed that Borderlands 4 appears to be getting some serious mobility enhancements, including a new double jump mechanic—which would be the first time since Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel that a Borderlands game allows players to properly redirect in the air. Alongside with double jumping, the new trailer gives us a hint at what to expect from new weapons and character abilities.

The first thing you might notice watching the trailer is just how gory is it, which aligns with previous comments from those involved with the game about a more serious tone. Fortunately, those that don't care for the excessive bloodshed will likely be able to tone it down or at least disable it entirely. We also got out first real look at the new Siren's abilities, which may have something to do with necromancy, since she spawned an energy clone of herself wielding a large scythe. Another vault hunter, although which exactly remains unknown, has an action skill that appears to spawn a mech or energy cannon around them, while another appears to have a secondary weapon on their arm to launch projectiles at enemies. The vault hunter commonly referred to online as a "techno viking" (the character with the cybernetic left arm) appears briefly in the beginning of the trailer summoning two elemental axes, which are then thrown at enemies. Later on in the trailer, the same character appears with a unique melee attack, suggesting that each vault hunter may be getting multiple action skills, instead of the single skill that Borderlands players have come to expect.

The new trailer ends with a Matrix-style distortion effect and the words "Break free" across the screen, likely a hint to a plot line or perhaps a clue that not everything is as it seems on Kairos.

I have... very mixed and very conflicted feelings about this game. Borderlands 3 felt just where they should have left it off... the plot quite literally outgrew the whole "vault hunter" thing

after Typhon DeLeon and Pandora itself being the master vault.

I'm also unsure that the looter shooter gameplay will be fun enough to prevail over the impending cringe writing that tries to cater to everyone and caters to absolutely nobody - aka Der Heilige (Holy) Yap, 5th Edition

1 was magical, 2 was repetitive but expansive, and then I left this franchise because it clearly has nothing to offer beyond that.

I thoroughly enjoyed 1 & 2, General Knox gave me a good laugh a few times when his DLC arrived. Could never get excited for the pre-sequel or BL3.

Never played it, but genre busting games (or those that come in fresh), can't keep doing the same thing. Once you make your mark, it's hard (if not impossible) to maintain novelty. Making a franchise almost seems like a punch in the nuts.

This was my take too, Epic Game Store released the 3rd one for free at one point, tried it but, meh, just didn't capture me like the first two games.

Nah the bigger issue in businesses is that once a franchise is designed, which is done with the utmost care, a very defined vision of what it needs to be... shortly after it becomes 'a business as usual' product that just needs to roll off the factory line. The dedication and care that went into its initial design, is taken for granted and not built upon further. Very often, too, you even figure out that continued development is passed over to some B-team of juniors or something.

Look at the humor in Borderlands. Its a perfect example. We've regressed into the popular social media/gen Z subculture references that go nowhere and don't take players seriously. I can't even look at it or hear that kind of dialogue anymore without hovering the mouse directly to the uninstall button.

This here little video explains it admirably and puts the finger on the cringe I've been having with so so many recent titles.

Its not about the fact something's a franchise. Its about the fact franchises are used by corporate as vehicles to sell repetitive junk made by bottom tier writers.

On the contrary, look at a franchise like Total War or Hitman. Still great games - and the 'novelty' is in the details or the actual content just being great fun to play.

Same here, I enjoyed BL2 the most - even with the grind...
BL3 was stale....
Hoping the best for BL4, but I would love a remaster for BL2 the most!

BL2 doesn't need one tbh, it got a texture pack at some point and it still looks and plays well.
A remake on unreal engine makes more sense, but I'm not sure it would actually be for the better, could lose its magic.
