AMD Previews New Desktop Platforms

AMD today previewed its next two generation of desktop platforms for performance and mainstream platforms. The new platforms outline details of new AMD chipsets, processors and graphics cores. AMD's next new performance platform will be Spider. Spider is the first platform for AMD Phenom X4 and X2 processors, slated for later this year. AMD pairs the Phenom X4 and X2 processors with the upcoming RD7xx series chipsets for Spider. Spider also features PCIe 2.0, and HyperTransport 3.0, or HT3. Following Spider is Leo. Leo is AMD's 2008 platform refresh, again designed to accommodate Phenom X4 and X2 processors with up to 6MB of L3 cache. Leo will still use the RD7xx series chipsets, but with support for up to four GPUs in CrossFire. Following Leo's debut in 2009, are Python, Cartwheel and Copperhead DDR3 platforms. Should we be wanting this stuff? How fast is Phenom? Who really cares about what they're doing 2 years from now when we have no idea how fast the stuff coming out in a couple weeks is.

we will see when Phenom comes out...preliminaries state that its faster than any current AMD chip and Intel offering today...how true that is remains to be seen. They left out the FX procs which should be out by the end of this year.

I am happy to see all the AMD news lately. I have been holding on to my 939's but have debated over jumping in to AM2. With the sound of the new AMD/ATi products around the end of this year, I will be waiting untill then to change platforms.

Not a big fan of the Pinwheel and Cartwheel names though.

I agree about the names lol they are a bit questionable
other than that yeah I love hearing all the news about AMD...
I seriously hope phenom can perform...AMD really needs to release something that will take the market to take intel's breath away otherwise I don't see AMD making it long enough for us to see "cartwheel"...

Yeah, they should be AM2+, but AM2+ motherboards aren't out yet. Wait a few months for those.

AM2+ processors will work in AM2 boards.

At the moment it isn't. DDR3 RAM clock for clock has higher latencies than DDR2, the only difference between 2 and 3 is 3 runs lower voltages which affects how fast the memory can be clocked. Eventually the DDR3 memory will be good enough to beat DDR2, but not for a while, particularly on price.

Aye, and as we all know, AMD was smart about their memory path. From the standard ram ,to ddr. Not DDR until just recently as price and performance warranted such. By that time, DDR3 should be down to DDR2 prices.

Good to know...it just came out apparently.

DDR3 clocks MUCH better than DDR2. But it's so expensive, it isn't really worth it.
