Does anyone use a 3D print as a GPU stand? I've been needing one and have seen a lot of people using a PLA bracket or stand. Happened to have this little guy around, but the heat has always concerned me. Obviously the housing isn't getting up to the 90+ degree some hot GPUs can hit (R9 390 pictured) but with softening points of around 60- degrees I'm still a bit concerned. Any experiences?

use thermocouple of multimeter to get what is the surface temp of contact point between card and the figure.
i doubt the shroud of the card goes close to 60°.

I was literally thinking about this yesterday, my gpu is on the first pcie channel so I'll need a taller stand, I'm looking for a cool art but I suck at 3d modelling.
Honestly, I wouldn't be concerned that much about the heat, if the inside of your case is hot enough for melt down some 3d printed support, then you have problems bigger then losing the support

Reassuring, thanks! I was thinking it's probably fine, but obviously if I'm not totally sure I have concerns about potential disasters.

@SenditMakine check out Thingiverse! Here's the model I used: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2717606

UPDATE: Just came across this post on another forum going over some component modding FAQs. Seems heat is definitely not that much of an issue and they're recommending lots of plastic vinyl and regular ol' paints. The author also responded to a similar question saying it really doesn't get that hot. Helpful.

i have water heater with thermometer and at about 42-44° i cant hold my hands under the water.
run some benchmark for about 15mins so card can heat up and touch the shroud next to the figurine. if you can hold it more then 2-3 sec temp is less then 40-42

Now I'm addicted to it...
I'm so sorry to have ruined you like this. Feel free to DM me if you want advice or anything, I work in 3D printing.

That's not really a good way to assess temperatures as heat is relative to your environment.
If you live in a cold region and are acclimatized, 42C will feel hotter to you than a person that lives in a hot region and is used to daily temps around 42C.

The skin also contains thermally sensitive receptors leading to pain sensation known as thermal nociceptors that respond to noxious or harmful temperatures. Nociceptors that are responsive to temperature signal to the central nervous system that tissue damage is imminent and that the affected body part should be withdrawn immediately from the thermal source (e.g. a finger on a hot plate). These receptors are active when the temperature of the skin falls below 15-18 °C or rises above 45 °C. When they are activated, the sensation is one of pain. Although the thresholds for activating heat and cold-sensitive nociceptors are usually described as being greater than 45 °C and less than 15°C, in some individuals mild cooling (25-31 °C) and warming (34-40 °C) of the skin can evoke sensations of burning and stinging as well as innocuous sensations of cold and warmth (Green, 2002).

I did some benchmarking with my heat beast R9 390 last night. 94C on full load. No deformation to the model, so I'm fairly confident it's fine. A longer session that hot is the only thing I might keep an eye on. Switching that GPU out for my 3070 that arrived yesterday, so I don't expect I'll have any issues with that much cooler card.

Thanks for the help!
