Sony May Sell Cell Production Facilities

It appears that Sony and Toshiba could be in talks regarding Sony's production facilities used to manufacture the Cell processors found in the PlayStation 3 console. This move comes as part of Sony's strategy to focus more of its resources on products such as image sensors used in digital cameras and camcorders, rather than managing costly semi-conductor assets. The rumoured figure for the sale is 100 billion yen, which is approximately $870 million US, with a final agreement expected within a few months, although Sony and Toshiba have both declined to comment on this. If a deal is reached, it is expected that Sony would set up a joint venture with Toshiba in order to secure a stable supply of chips for its consoles.

I can understand why they both along with IBM wotrked together to produce the CELL processor but Toshiba securing a stable supply of chips for the PS3 WHICH BY THE WAY IS A BLU-RAY PLAYER I just cant herlp but rofl :roll:

This is so funny! Ken Kutarage funnned up big time! No wonder he 'resigned'. Would be funny if the deal is that all new PS3s ship with HD DVD player rather than blu-ray.

ibm makes cell cpu's too, ibm has a factory not too far from my house that makes cell cpu's last time i checked lol.

id bet the next line of Intel and Amd cpu's has made Sony and Toshiba rethink their strategy. Considering they make their own cpu why haven't they started adapting them to other projects such as laptops and home computers?

i just hope that this will drive the cost of the p3 down... and also possibly add the option to buy cheap computers using cell based desktops too. ( computers that are around $500 to $600 total cost )
