Gateway Goes with AMD Phenom CPUs in New GM and GT Series Desktops

Advanced Micro Devices got some much-needed good news this week when Gateway announced that it's trading in Intel chips for AMD Phenom quad-core processors in two new high-end desktop machines. Gateway, which has been mostly an Intel-only company for years, yesterday unveiled AMD-based GM and GT series desktop systems. And for a microprocessor company that has been struggling with missed shipment dates, financial woes and a slide in mind share, this is welcome news, according to industry analysts. Focusing on "media-hungry users," the new Gateway GM5664 desktop is geared toward gamers and users interested in video editing or watching live TV online. Available at U.S. retailers for $1,149.99, the computer offers 2.3GHz AMD Phenom 9600 Processor, 3GB DDR2 memory (2x1024MB modules and 2x512MB modules), 2x500GB 7200 rpm hard drives, ATI Radeon HD 2400XT 256MB discrete video and hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD player and SuperMulti DVD-RW DL drive. The Gateway GT5662, which costs $749.99, is a multimedia lite machine. This desktop uses the 2.20GHz lower-power AMD Phenom quad-core 9500 processor, a 500GB hard drive and its own SuperMulti drive to enable users to burn content onto DVDs or CDs.

I would have to agree with Trog100... calling it a gaming PC and using the HD 2400XT seems kind of lame. They could have at least spent $5-10 more on the HD 2600 Pro to add a little more gaming power. The HD 2400XT is great for a multimedia PC, but you would have to play most of the current games at low resolutions and low detail. The HD 2600 Pro is no gaming monster either, but for the extra $5-10 you will get considerable gains in performance.

actually they aren't lies. games don't utilize for cores much so in all essence the phenom does dominate in all games. all be cause you can oc the crap out of your intel doesn't make phenom a poor performer. it's also not to bad on power. the 2400xt is great for desktops because as always amd/ati has decent image quality, and i'm sure the price won't be to bad either. i'm sure this desktop is not going out towards the high end market so it seems a decent fit either way . so..... trog... why don't you prove it. you've been here a long time, why make yourself sound like a fanboy..... give me proof and i won't continue to think you're as stupid as you sound

Woah, harsh words dude. In all reality, all benchmarks and scores favor Intels older quads and current crop of quads. AMD wins only a few benchmarks at that. However, I digress. Intel quads in these types of machines wouldnt be offered at this price point, so its good news for AMD.

Worth noting is that since Acer bought Gateway, they have been showing AMD more love with laptops as well.

My thoughts exactly WarEagle, it'll give them a bit more exposure to the market. And also to all the sheep(people) who think top performance is all about who has the highest GHz or the most ram. They'll start buying these machines and without realizing it, they'll figure out they have an AMD proc and be like whoa, this system kicks ass! LOL

it may be a typo, but remmber, most people who buy prebuilds from dell/gateway/hp/compcrap and so on, dont really know about high end gaming, they just play shit like yahoo games or low res free games, even if its a 2400 those people wont care, they will still beable to play the games they want to play.

i would guess if it is a 2400 it will allow you to at least go up to a 2600 or maby a 3650

all in all this is great news for prebuild consumers and amd !!!!

and i have alwase had good experiances with ACER lappys and desktops as a tech, if its under warr you dont normaly have to much trouble getting replacement parts, they shiped me replacement parts for a system thats PSU went out, didnt even argue, just upped me to top level support, i told them what had happened, they checked the shop i worked at and called back at the number they found in the phone book(online) and then shiped full rebuild kit(the board/cpu/ram where fine but they wanted to be safe) all in all i was quite impressed, HP has shiped me hdd's without asking more then what the serial number was and how i knew the drive was going out(smart rocks!!) they sent me the replacements 2nd day, swaped out the parts and an updated set of disks to set the system up with

in essence its a nice home entertainment box but it wont play games in even a vaguely reasonable fashion and it certainly wont play dx 10 games in such a fashion .. so it cant be truthfully sold as a dx 10 gaming machine..

the second lie.. they claim unparalleled performance from its cpu.. its quite simply not true.. which makes it a lie..

Thanks for this post...On a side note...I have 2 pc's on my desk a little 939 socket AMD 4200X2 (Ironically a Gateway and the first pc I've ever owned!)and a home built Q6600 monster with dual 8800GTS's, which is a great rig and I like it...the upgrade to Q6600 from E6600 did enlarge my penis...but to be honest, if I could run sli or an 8800 series card in the AMD rig (mobo and case will not allow such a card so I'm stuck with a 7600gt in the AMD rig) the AMD rig would perform just about the same...probably wouldn't set any bench records, but so-what! I don't do much else besides gaming...Back on the subject at hand...This Gateway news is very good for AMD...it's about time something good happened to them...On a further side note I've been comparing prices between AMD/ATI and Intel/nVidia for a near future build and for the same $4000 it took to finish this Intel I can achieve close to if not exceed the performance and still have money left over to take my chick out to dinner and buy some games...AND that's including A new mouse/keyboard, a 1000 watt PSU, a 24" monitor, a liquid cooling kit, a 750 gig HDD and two of those 3870X2 GPU's!! all for less than $3600... Of course when the higher end phenoms appear on the scene the price will undoubtably go up, but I'm sure it will be nowhere near the selling of your shriveled raisen soul price of the top dog Intel! which is over $1000!!!The bang for the buck factor is definitely in AMD's corner at the moment.

note your gonna get ass rammed by some intel fanboi's that will point out that when benching you will get higher 3dmarks and lower superPI times using an overclocked intel rig.

then again i really couldnt care less about synthetic benches.

i compared a few c2d overclocked systems friends have with my system for common tasks for me.

at 3.2gz the c2d was VERY slitly faster then my x2@2.85gz, in video encoding from xvid to x264+vorbis.
it was faster in all synthetics, it however was not notably faster in any of the games we tested, a few fps here and there, and yes same videocard 8800gt.

most games just dont give a crap about a quadcore , dual core some do, most dont really tho.

all in all tho comparing very simlar systems side by side his system was only slitly faster in common tasks we both do but his was also alot more expencive about 3-4x the price of my system!!!!

if your not gonna overclock or your only overclocking because you can then for the price amd is a better buy, you cant beet the low price amd full atx boards like the TA770 from biostar

i gotta pull my cooler off soon and remove the crappy goop i used last time i put it togather, i just got 44grams of ceramiq for under 15bucks shiped from sidewindercomputers, great buy!!!

i'm not saying you're wrong trogg... just that that the fact that they're lieing is untrue. Sure the intel's dominate the benchmarks.... hence benchmarks. name one person who buys a gateway for the benchmarks. real world gaming will not show that the phenom sucks compared to the intel. it will show however that it's cheaper and more cost effective for the customer. and trogg i'm not a fanboy at all i'm a benchmark junky and wish that i was at the top of allour benchmarks here on the forums but i've been a faithful amd customer for ever and quite frankly think that in real world gaming my pc handles the load just fine. i just don't think they're liars. yeah the phenom isn't as fast, but it is effective as a quad core, and gaming on it should be fine. most of the benchmarks that show the intel creaming the amd's in our forums only show it because the intels overclock much more then an amd and thus turn a small gap into a very large on. on the not of the 2400 yeah that's a pretty crappy card for a gaming rig, but it would suffice for what most people who buy a store bought rig will game with it. as with all today games if you wanna game and game with everything turned up, you pretty much have to build your rig, you can't buy many rigs that can do it.
