A relatively new company, with aspirations of great fame and fortune, is seeking to make a footprint in the IT industry. With the name Rock, Rock has decided to make one massive laptop. Dubbed the "Xtreme SL8", this machine claims roughly 15,000 points in 3DMark06. To do this, it runs the following hardware.
  • 2.93GHz Core 2 Extreme QX6800
  • A pair of NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX GPUs
  • Up to 4GB of DDR2 800
  • Your choice of one 600GB 7200RPM HDD, or 1TB of 5400RPM RAID storage.
  • One HD-DVD reader/burner
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, as well as a Gigabit Ethernet port.
  • 6600mAh battery

Will be overpriced and certainly unnecessary (not to the extent of that $750K job - at least this has decent hardware inside). For those with too much money.

They're not a new company, i had a rock lappy in '98, their site says they've been going since 92

Nice specs though but a lil excessive

hawk: it'll be expensive yes, but their prices arent really overpriced as such, not in the same way as alienware, dell xps etc laptops anyway, theyre gaming ones are usually a few hundred less than equivalent spec dells, and they're upgrades dont cost the earth

That's definitely a plus. When I look at desktops/laptops like this, that are over the top, I always think alienware/voodoo/falcon prices, which are just rediculous. But to each their own, I guess.

I'm so sick of these news website posting about "an amazing new laptop." It's always like this with Clevo resellers. They all sell the same thing, but a month later, one of them ends up on a news website like it's brand new.

Observe.

They're all the same!

And that's just a few. There is nothing "new" about this piece of news. Imagine if TechPowerup posted an article for each of these!

My question is, why the QX6800? Why not the QX9650? It would generate less heat and consume less power. Every little bit helps in machines like this.

Side note, if I was rich, I'd buy a gaming lappy like this, if nothing else than for LANing. Way more convenient than lugging even a SFF PC around.

Nice specs, no doubt...But, I have to wonder why would someone want to spend the $$ to have a lappy with that much power instead of a home rig with plenty of power? The only thing I can think of is maybe they travel on business alot and want something to do at night in the hotel? Anyone have any ideas I might have missed?

This is such crap. With how limited and expensive upgrades for laptops, this just doesn't make any sense. Build a sweet desktop for $1500 and a decent laptop for $1000.. You've got a good upgrade path on the desktop, and a laptop for convenience, $4000 laptops are just throwing money away.

I have to disagree with you.

If Techpowerup didnt post the news article about the Dell laptops getting the 8800 upgrade I wouldnt have known. I was specifically waiting for the release of the 8800's in DELL (because I get a student discount on DELLS only). So, just because a news story doesnt apply to you, it doesnt mean that it wont help other people. If you dont like it, dont read it.

The Dell is different. It's a different computer. All the links I posted are the same Clevo computer (D900C/D901C) rebranded differently. I was just commenting on how only one or two random Clevo resellers got in the news like they were unique, when I think any news related to them should be reported as one big one. If not, then at least report just the first one.

There's pretty much 3 names when it comes to ultra high-end gaming laptops lately. Basically, if it's not an Alienware or a Dell, it's just a rebranded Clevo.

Edit: I guess a little bit of Toshiba lately too.
