6700XT - POST Issues

Hi,

Specs:
  • ASUS AM4 ATX ROG STRIX B550-A
  • 5700X3D
  • MSI RX6700XT 12GB MECH 2X
  • 32GB Corsair (2x16) DDR4
  • RM750X
Further information:
  • RAM on DOCP profile
  • Latest BIOS
  • Latest drivers
  • RAM/PSU have been swapped for others and no change.
  • No other issues with the PC whatsoever since it was built.
  • 2x monitors - AOC 32" 1440p via HDMI, Samsung 27" 1080p via DP.
  • Certificed HDMI/DP cables (which oddly matters)

Issue:
Coming in from being shut down, the computer will go into a continuous loop of attempting to POST, throwing a VGA error, resetting and continuing. No video output happens during this time. However, if I power cycle once, everything works fine and the computer boots normally.

System has been extensively stress tested, and there isn't a single issue during use - I can max load every component in my system with zero issues. The ONLY issue is failing to POST without a power cycle beforehand.

The issue has been reported frequently with 6700XT's, and it was suggested it may have something to do with the GPU failing to handshake monitors with power saving features, which causes the VGA error. I have turned power saving features off on my monitors but the problem persists.

Any suggestions?

Are those aoc monitors identical? Do you have a TV you can test the pc with to verify the same behavior.

I've had issues with amd cards and specific monitors but it's been pretty rare.

I have one AOC monitor and one Samsung monitor.

I have swapped the 27" out and it made no difference

If you're on Windows then go to the Control Panel and land there:

The fast startup is enabled by default and causes issues precisely because your PC doesn't shut down completely.

DISCLAIMER: this is not a real solution, just a workaround.

You could also try flashing a different BIOS on your GPU. Worked for me but only just once when one legacy card had exhibited UEFI glitches so I flashed it to something that doesn't support UEFI. Wasn't the real cause of this issue in other cases. WARNING: it is likely to brick your GPU, make sure you have a backup video card and enough time to reflash it properly. Back your BIOS up and store it somewhere safe. I won't guarantee it'll help anyway.

I also assume you tried ALL DPs on your GPU to no avail but if you didn't try different combinations out. What if you have a glitchy port..?

I also assume you tried booting without any monitor connected whatsoever. Was the behaviour exactly the same? If yes it's not your monitors, or cables, it's something else.

Chances are very low but it might be your CPU playing tricks. Try giving it slightly more voltage and see if the issue persists.

Fast startup is off, and has always been off.

No difference

Hmmmmm, then this fuckup is very deep. Any chance to try this GPU in a different system?

No.

Again, it's not exactly a rare thing - there are dozens of posts about it with no solutions.

It's not the end of the world and everything works fine once it's booted, but it is annoying

DP is primary display port. I would put the 1440 monitor on that, and the 1080 on hdmi. Both on DP ports if possible really.

You get this card used?

Breadboard system

hook system staight up to wall and make sure no atx connections on motherboard or gpu are damaged.

Try system in different room

Try card in another system, even if at a repair shop

No.

Utterly pointless 'advice' lol.

@drdn0

You may want to rethink about what you wrote.

You came here asking for help, I am providing several suggestions to try.

Being that way towards senior members will cause others to not help you. I for one have been here since 2007. I also wrote the bios flashing procedures for AMD Polaris and newer cards.

Also on another note good luck finding a solution because your choices are very slim on how to fix said issue.

But hey it's your funeral, you made your bed, now lay in it.
