Micron to Cut 15% of its Workforce During the Next Two Years

After reporting a $344 million fourth-quarter loss last week Micron today said it is going to reduce its global workforce by approximately 15 percent during the next two years. Most of the workforce cuts will occur in Boise.

The combination of declining customer demand and product oversupply in the marketplace has driven selling prices for NAND flash memory significantly below manufacturing costs,

Micron said in a statement.
As a result, IM Flash Technologies (IMFT), a joint venture between Micron and Intel, will discontinue the supply of NAND flash memory from Micron's Boise facility. The NAND operation shutdown will reduce IMFT's NAND flash production by approximately 35,000 (200 millimeter) wafers per month, according to Micron. Production in the other two joint ownership NAND flash facilities in Lehi and Utah will continue operating at full speed for now.

This announcement is GOOD TIMING. With stock markets collapsing and the world economies slowing, NOW is the time to right-size... not wait until it's too late.

The loss was caused by them switching from low to high denisty chips,aka the single sided stick fiasco(imo) The single sided sticks i have now are semmingly ok(new 2.0v spec) but i bet since they switched to the new chips,they have lost a lot of customers.Crucial ram used to rock,but now its more of a boy band.

I completely agree. Only thing crucial ram has for them now is their speedy RMA department, which I've used twice now. :banghead:

this is not good news. I was hoping to see from them some Micron D9 equvilaent for DDR3, but i guess not.

Doesn't mean you wont see product, just means production will be down. They are not going to be laying off design engineers....

yea, i realize that. DDR3 has been out for a while but we yet havent seen any chips from Micron that would do the same for DDR3 as D9s did for DDR2.
