8TB SSD wall

I have a worksheet in Excel of hard disks and SSD storage and I have seen that more and more 4TB models are coming down in price

This is already pressuring controller vendors as 64 layer give way to 96 layer and even 112 layer NAND. Server NAND is even more layers suggesting consumer facing products have a long way forward.

Right now I use 2TB devices as that is all there is on the lower power class devices for mobile users.

My Lenovo T14 has a WD SN350 2TB which is 96 layer so potentially this could be larger in capacity but so far WD does not want to do that

I suppose you mean consumer drives?

According to this, the largest enterprise SSD is 100TB.

That 100TB SSD has been around a while and not many were sold as hard disks at 30TB are a lot cheaper

I am more focused on 7mm SATA and M.2 NVMe 2280 form factors which are common in laptops

Looking around I noticed a dual 18TB LTO-9 tape system with dual tape drives for $14,000. It has TB3 port to connect to a laptop or desktop easily.

Well, standard stuff in desktops as well. I guess that the capacity will increase in the future with higher density chips just like they're done so far.

One of the companies showed off single side 8TB NVMe at CES 2024. Forgot who it was, but that paves the way for 16TB consumer.

Sabrent was offering 8TB and WD Black is too hot for laptops

USB-C boxes for NVMe SSD are now $10 at fleabay so I grabbed a few to complement the SATA boxes
