I have been using Intel for many years and have recently purchased a 9800X3D to use. I have been out of the AMD loop for many years.

I purchased a Heatkiller IV Pro waterblock. I am planning on using it with the CPU on an Aorus X870 Elite mobo. I am planning on using the stock IHS, no de-lidding or die-contact going on.

Do I also need the Thermal Grizzle AM5 Adapter & Offset Mounting Kit: https://www.thermal-grizzly.com/en/adapter-offset-mounting-kit/s-tg-mk
&
The Thermal Grizzly AM5 Contact Sealing Frame: https://www.thermal-grizzly.com/en/contact-sealing-frame/s-tg-csf

I can't speak to the offset mounting. I know AM4 had some benefits from using an offset.

I have a 7800X3D and am using a Corsair block. I have had zero issues.

Amazon.com: Thermalright ASF-Black AM5 CPU Holder, Corrective Anti-Bending Fixing Frame, AM5 Full-fit Fixed Non-Marking Mounter, AM5 Anti-Bending Contact Frame, CPU Cooler Standard : Thermalright: Electronics

Thermalright makes contact frames as well. They are usually half the price and do the same thing. I have used them for AM5 and LGA1700.

The contact frame is entirely unnecessary on AMD. There is no ILM pressure issue on AMD like there is on Intel.

In regards to offset mounting, it is not required but may help performance. I have seem some people getting good results from it but I've also seem some people report compatibility issues as well.

Offset mounting with AM5 socket can be problematic from 2 issues.

1) the AMD socket getting in the way preventing the full 7mm offset
2) the first NVMe heatsink getting in the way

See here https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/thoughts-for-a-new-am5-waterblock.326811/post-5340394

I got lucky on #2 with my water block and was able to continue using the motherboard heatsink.
Depending on your motherboard, heatsink, and water block, you may have to make adjustments to make the offset work.
Note some AM5 water blocks might already include offset in the cold plate so research that.

Your challenges if any will depend on your motherboard. Overall the offset mounting is better but not required.

Looking at your motherboard choice it looks like you will be limited in the same way I am because that socket tab prevents the offset from rotating completely downward using the Thermal Grizzly offset mounting kit.
If you decide to air cool using Noctua instead, their offset kit will be fine.

I prefer the contact frame just from the standpoint it keeps the thermal paste from getting all over the CPU SMDs and under the IHS.

Thanks for all of the responses!

I think I will just run the waterblock as is, no contact frame, and no alignment kit.

I have reached that age  where if it runs, and it is cool enough during gaming, there is no reason for me to try and chase a couple more C's cooler.

I am lucky enough to live in a city that has a Microcenter, and one of the staff members talked me into buying the TG PhaseSheet PTM to use as my TIM between the CPU IHS and the waterblock. I will see how that works out.

Post some build pictures if you can. I'd like to see how well that water block fits. Good luck.

The Thermalright Kit works fine too and is the cheapest.

The frame is a nice thing to have but it's not absolutely mandatory. I like how it works and would spend the couple of bucks for it, since you're already going custom, it wouldn't hurt.

It's all covered well in the thread, I wish you luck and a lot of enjoyment from your new machine. Awaiting build pics :toast:

Will do. I just received the waterblock today, which should be the last thing that I need to get this thing up and running.
