Hey guys, So I just got a new case and while checking is everything was plugged in and working properly(it was) I saw a little 4 pin plug and I thought it for my fans. I plugged it into my CHA_FAN and my pc wouldn’t turn on so I unplugged them and my pc was turned on fine. Then I tried plugging it in while my pc was on and it turned off and now the PB_PWR light keeps flashing and i'm not getting anything. I have a asus rog strix 365-f

I hate to be the one to tell you... That's a power connector for old floppy drives.

You may have killed your motherboard.

oh no
yeah thats a power connector and you could have blown something - REMOVE that cable!

Leave it off and unplugged for a few hours at the wall to see if its just a resettable fuse that'll fix itself, otherwise you could have a dead mobo and/or PSU

Go to 3:30. Same issue but luckily it just triggered overcurrent protection on the power supply and everything was okay.

I don't intend to be the one who tears strips off you, but it is so bloody dangerous to be plugging random power plugs into random places if you aren't 100% sure of yourself. Don't just "think" you know and hope that Lady Luck will help you out. There's no shame in reading the instruction manuals to make informed decisions.

It actually reminds me of a joke I heard from some mechanics. They always tell the new guy to make sure he doesn't attach the steering linkage backwards, otherwise the vehicle will turn left when you want to turn right. Anyone who believes that probably shouldn't be working on a car.

For further reference: cables that power fans are attached to... fans.

I don't understand how you were even able to plug that connector in to a fan header without applying unusual force. I am pretty sure the connectors are keyed just to ensure the correct connector is inserted, and that it is inserted in the correct orientation - just to avoid such situations.

In effect, you connected voltage to voltage instead of voltage to a load. Not good. If there had been high voltage present instead of the low voltage DC found on motherboards, there could have been serious consequences - like sparks, shorted and burned out components, burns to flesh, fire and serious injury - or worse! :twitch:

Then I tried plugging it in while my pc was on
   For future reference, there are no power connectors on the motherboard that are "hot swappable". None! That is, none are designed to support plugging in or unplugging cables or devices when voltage is present. None. Always, as in every single time, unplug the computer from the wall, connect your power cable, double check to make sure the connection is correct and tight, then apply power.

And for the record, while some data cables are "hot swappable", some are not. If not sure, better safe than sorry. Power down first.

you don't read the manual of your psu
And the manual for the motherboard certainly says that motherboard connector is to power a chassis/case fan.

***

Every body here has certainly made stupid mistakes that could have been avoided if only we used a little common sense, had patience, and RTFM - read the friggin' manual. I think we might need to be reminded of that.

@adrian07 - You need to unplug the power supply from the wall. Then carefully inspect all your wiring again to make sure everything is correct and securely fastened. Then double check your wiring and plug the power supply back in and try to boot. If you still get the error, then I am afraid you might have damaged your motherboard. I would swap in another power supply to make sure. If it still does not boot with the second supply, then you likely need a new board. Just hope you didn't fry your CPU and RAM at the same time. :(

Everyone has already said what needed to be said. I just dearly hope you haven't totaled that motherboard.

There's a rib on the floppy drive power connector that acts as a key and prevents it from going into the wrong ports. What psu is that? It must be hella old to still be adding floppy drive power connectors at this point when floppy drives have been extinct for over a decade.

Nope. A quick bit of homework with our friend Bing Google, shows there are actually quite a few supplies currently on the market that include a floppy power connector. For example, the popular Seasonic Focus Plus Gold series supports a floppy via a Molex to FFD adapter. The very popular EVGA SuperNova 650 G+ even supports 3 floppies! 2 directly plus 1 more via a Molex to FDD adapter.

I note that configuration 4-pin "Berg" connector is occasionally used by other devices too. I used to have a tape backup drive that used them.

the magic smoked has been freeed
you just put +5v and 12v Though you're usb header to the rest of the chipset
board is 100% dead unless it has protection on the data lines which if I am reading the pin out correctly it does not
