Ageia Physx ?

Hello all... I changed my GPU from GTX560Ti to 6970 and i wanna buy an AGEIA PHYSX (BFG) dedicated card for the upcoming BATMAN game... The question is that this card it's supported by the new PHYSX software ???? I got one card that i can buy for cheap (like 15 Euros)...

As far as i remember support for that was stoped not long after nvidia bought them.

You'd have to use an nvidia card along with your card to run physx.

No, just because of its 48 shader count. Look for the above cards I mentioned, they all have atleast 96 shaders.

THANKS... but i have a another problem... my Mb doesn't have a second full pci-express slot, so i'm limited to regular PCI or pci-express x1... So what should i do then ?

Arkham Asylum used an old version of the Physx SDK and worked fine with the PPU cards but the new one uses updated libraries. The PPU cards support up to 2.8.1

I think that nVidia are being jerks about this. The old PPUs can handle both CPU and GPU physics but nVidia says that the PPUs don't have the performance level required for current games, an statement to which I agree (the Ageia PPU is similar in physx performance to an 8600GT) but they could port the newer SDKs to the PPUs and let the user choose "lowest" physx settings if they desire to keep using them. Or if that isn't possible for some reason, let the game use them for the calculations they support (akin to using a DX10 card with a DX11 game).

Heck, if they put their minds to it I bet they could allow for the PPUs to work in tandem with a GPU in some sort of SLI physx but, sadly, they choose not to. They just simply left PPU users out in the cold.

Those dedicated physx cards only had something equivalent to 12 or 16 shader cores, if it did work, it wouldn't be enough muscle for modern games, you need 92 or more.

It has 48 shaders, won't do any good. As others stated above you'll want 96 or more shaders on the card.

In the end if i want a good physx capable card (96 shaders minimum) i must change my mobo with at least 2x full pcie slots...

in all honesty, play the game without physx, and see if you still want it... keep in mind that if you do, you'll need to switch out that MB for one with more 16x slots.

You should be able to get a low-profile x16 GT 430 and plug it into a PCIe x1 to x16 adapter. This affects performance somewhat, but between being a lower-end card and being used only for Physx, probably less so.

Fair enough... but i can change my mobo with an ECS A890GXM-A and buy a cheap KFA2 9600GSO (96SP)... but i think that isn't worth it, no ?!

Is this new Batman just really heavy on the physx or is there something else going on?

i mean Arkham Asylum said it needed a GTX260 + Dedicated 9800GTX+, using my GTS 250 Alone(Same specs as a 9800GTX+) setting the physx to highest didn't have too bad of an effect on the framerate, and the game still ran at a playable framerate at 1440x900

are you sure the new Batman's not the same where the requirements for physx's are just massively Exaggerated?

In all the Games using Physx i own, the Extra load caused by the Physx effect made a bigger difference then the Physx effects themselves

If you still have that 560 and have thought of a board update then get a board and use the 560 for physx. It's a bit of overkill for dedicated physx but you can put it to use while it sits and get yourself a board.

Dude, don't fall into the Physx trap. Your board would only take a second video card only in a 1x pci slot. Short of cutting half of the pci bus off of an older card, I don't think you have much else to work with.

Is all this worth extra foggy hallways and papers fluttering? Think about what your getting in return.

The GTX560Ti will be gone monday... i got a buyer today... so i'm thinking to leave the Physx card and upgrade with that SSD that i'm planing to buy for a few weeks...

PhysX seems to have been one of those features that has a lot of technical merit, but for various reasons has never made the big time, so is hardly supported. In particular, I wouldn't go changing your PC round and spending lots of money just to see those PhysX effects in one game.

In particular, the way PhysX is implemented, it doesn't actually affect the gameplay at all and is simply a nice bit of eye candy. If you really have to play with it, get a GTX 570/580 or something (I see you've got the HD6970 and are selling the GTX 560 Ti) and enjoy PhysX on that. If nothing else, you can pick up some uber cool PhysX demos from the nvidia website.
