In 2018, AMD has decided to introduce a neat concept. By combining HDD with SSD, the technology was named StoreMI. Last year, the technology got re-designed from the ground up and now it reflects a completely safe and efficient way to get a faster PC with little effort. Now, StoreMI is copying the most used files onto a faster drive (SSD), and all the Windows calls are redirected to the copied files on the faster drive. By providing optimizations for storage, AMD has managed to provide a nice performance uplift for all owners of AMD Ryzen processors. However, today the company has introduced another update to its technology bringing in even more features.

Starting with the support for Ryzen Threadripper Pro, AMD now supports these processors for TRX40 and WRX80 motherboard chipsets as well. Next in line is a feature that supports SSD partitions. Now SSD partition can be used as a cache device. If you have an AMD X570, B550, 400 Series, X399, TRX40, or WRX80 motherboard, you can use the StoreMI software, which you can download here.

Did anyone actually manage to put this to good use? Even tho in the documentation it says that my B450 and 2400G board and cpu are supported, the installer thinks otherwise:

Also didn't the original version also support ram drives to speed up SSDs? Did they remove this in the new version?

Have you tried install newest chipset driver from AMD? Also uninstall any ASRock utilities prior installing chipset driver especially Polychrome. I've tested StoreMI works in my previous combo B450 + Ryzen 5 2600.

Yeah, I fail to see any advantages of the new version - at least on paper. They also removed write-cache, supposedly to 'prevent data loss' - and I fail to see how that 'problem' can't be solved from the software side...

Does anyone really need what this offers, even on paper? SSDs are dirt cheap and the reason to stinge on any solid state for an OS has all but disappeared.

Other option are Optane, and what does StoreMI offer make Optane really look like rip off.

Hi,
Think people use data drives for the purpose of keeping the os drive from filling up so I don't really see cloning files on another drive as something I'd want a utility to do.
If I wanted a file on the os drive I'd put it there :)

Also didn't the original version also support ram drives to speed up SSDs? Did they remove this in the new version?

The original version was a 3rd party software that AMD licensed in a limited fashion. It had some issues... Like the ram drive was live and if you crashed out or lost power, you'd lose or corrupt data. I also believe it was kind of hard on NAND.

So the new one has lost some functionality, gained some, but the big take away is that it traded off some speed for reliability.

You probably just glanced at the news. They were ditching the initial implementation and were working on a successor.

I don't know about that one. 8TB HDD is $100 USD. 8TB SSD is $1,000+. 2TB SSD might be fine if you only play a few game and that's about it. I only use my 2TB drive for games that benefit from it. All the rest are on a HDD. Doesn't make sense to go only SSD, I would end up spending over 20 grand.

I believe optane is multiple times faster as well as more expensive - making this the budget knockoff version in my mind. Also I thought I read intel is doing away with optane due to poor adoption. Both seem like a cool solution that is years too late (except for maybe very specific enterprise use cases in the case of optane). Nowadays it doesn’t look worth the effort for the gains/added risk. Woulda been da bomb 15 years ago though :)

Proprietary small drive and steep price compare to bigger space and virtually any SSD ( SATA or M.2) while offering split of second, yeah that's your "winning". We talking about desktop here, so price and performance ratio are critical.

This is a review of the old version of the software, the new version is very different.

Yes you can use any size SSD.
I tried it and I don't have any storage in my rig that is supported. It seems you have to have a HDD to pair the SSD with.

" Support enabled for SSD partition to be used as cache"
How can we use this new feature? I've tried letting a partition as free space, can't select it in storemi, tried formatting it to ntfs, not ssd partition isn't selectable.

Hi, I have exactly the same issue (same message)
MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX board+ Ryzen 3 2200G (I understood in the doc that it should be compatible)
I wrote to MSI support (because I discovered storeMI on they internet site), but they answered me that the storeMI software is no more available at AMD (no comment...)
I would like to contact storeMI support, but I didn't find any place to do that.
Did someone find a solution?
