So, I had a LG external trayloading BD drive completely break. When I build my new PC, it will have 5 1/4 inch bays. Would an internal tray-loader be more reliable?

Anecdotal, I reckon internal drives are probably built sturdier, although the laser and mechanism should have about the same reliability. Problem is finding a quality computer case with 5.25-inch bays nowadays. There are very few if any left.

I like the Pioneer brand rom drives. They can really take a beating.

LG WH16NS40 can be modified to read UHD Blu-ray discs (if you care about that).

That's the one I have.

I have two. Really easy to do. You can grab the FW and tool in a single zip. Probably can't share the link here. Google is your friend.

That's what I use, Samsung dropped out of them and I had a Sony unit fail causing slow post issues

For that particular drive it needs to be FW 1.2 or UHD doesn't work properly. Factory now is 1.5 so it must be downgraded.
Never mentioned a specific drive?

The internal drives should technically be less in cost , perform better due to not having a wallwart as a psu, don't suffer from cable wear.

Pioneer BDR-2213

I have two of these. One in an external enclosure, and one in a comp. They've served me well so far. I don't burn near as much as i used to, but they work every time for any media I've used. Had them for at least 4 years.

Aren't most external optical drives just standard drives in an enclosure with an USB to SATA converter?

Only three 5.25" bays, but it's better than nothing.
