Asrock RX7700 XT Challenger & PSU

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying the mentioned GPU and a new PSU, since my old one is only 450W. I read a suggested PSU is 750W for this card, but I want to buy a 550W bequiet! Pure Power 12M.
I know I should follow the suggested specs, but I'm playing only at 1080p and limit all games to 60Hz and according to TPU review this GPU uses up to 100W with these limitations. My monitor is 60Hz 1080p and there's really no reason for me to change it (iiyama T2252MTS, touchscreen ).
Do you thing I'll be fine with the PSU/GPU setup playing the way I mentioned?

In my point of view only the efficiency from 0% to 100% is important for a power supply. therefore too low wattage can cause over 100% on the output for some case scenarios. I saw in the past that many got rid of low wattage power supplies, especially those in the range of 450-550W

efficiency vs Wattage (I hope you get my point why a high watt number does not really matter - assuming the watt number is high enough for your use case!)

Also consider buying a power supply where you can find a very good efficiency in the range from 0-50 Watt on the output. (It has a reason why this range is hardly measured or specified!)

Some better power supplies have a zero fan mode, which is usually half of the specified Wattage. In my case 50 percent of 750Watt is usually less what my computer needs with an entry Ryzen 7600X, a large X670 mainboard, several case fans and a Radeon 7800XT.

Usually you want to keep a mainboard, a case and a power supply for a very long time. E.g. 10 years.

Definitely you don’t need a 750W PSU for a 7700XT.

550W is the bear minimum and that depends on the rest of the system too, which you do not state.
You can fill your system specs in detail on your TPU profile page.

7700XT is a 240-250W card, maybe up to 300W in some AIB OC models.
1080p, 60FPS is not that demanding and in most games the card should be powered well below 200W. Some games though can push the power.

A nice quality Gold 550-600W should be ok.

The AsRock Challenger wasn't reviewed here, but with a boost clock the same as the two reviewed Sapphire models, I would expect it to have similar power requirements. These models use up to 240 W in games and show momentary spikes of up to 300 W.

550 W should be enough for this card provided that you have a typical setup with a CPU which uses less than 200 W fully stressed. Putting your complete system specification in the TPU user profile would help us make better estimates. Please note that your PSU wattage should cover a worst case scenario plus some reserve, possibly enabling a future upgrade.

By experience I’d say that this system with a 7700XT should draw around 300-350W avg with spikes up to 400-450W assuming that the GPU is on full ~250W power.

Again, a 550W should be enough if no CPU upgrade is on the map. Something like 5800X, 5900X, 5950X would require a 600W PSU.

The 5600X is low power CPU and even if a 5700X3D is in your thoughts it’s on the same level of power.

A RX7700 XT is overkill for 1080@60fps. You can get away with an older RX6800 or 6700XT. The added benefit of the older cards is 1. it SHOULD be cheaper if you can find them and 2. The 6800 has more V-Ram (16GB vs 12GB)

Both the 6800 and 6700XT have enough grunt for 1440p (I currently have an 6700XT and game at 1440p. easily 70-165fps in a LOT of games.) if you do upgrade to a better monitor.

The 6800 is still a very very capable card despite what others may say.

Before you make any sort of decision though. RDNA4 is literally over a month away (should be hitting us in the face January next year) and I highly suggest waiting and seeing what RDNA4 has to offer before hunting for an upgrade to your RX570. If RDNA4 doesnt appeal to you. Then at least the other GPUs should be cheaper.

(if you want a cost effective upgrade that is)

And the 6800 is exactly on the same performance level, so overkill too… 6700XT has also 12GB as 7700XT so…

If its an issue in 2-3 years then the OP can ask again what would be better than the 6000 series. He has 2-3 years to save some money.

Should I be recommending the OP a 4070Ti? A 4090? Because "how about in 2-3 years??"

Nobody knows what games will be like in 2-3 years but Id say the 6800 and 6700XT will still have enough power for 1080p gaming.

For example How long did it take for the 1080Ti to be relegated to an 1080p card? The 1080Ti is 7 years old and can still do 1080p@60FPS and more if you dont want things like ray tracing which is obviously going to kill it.

And the 6800 is exactly on the same performance level, so overkill too… 6700XT has also 12GB as 7700XT so…

Not really. the 6800 is slower than the 7700XT by some 10-20fps here and there. But its because its slower and older, (possibly) cheaper with more V-RAM that I recommended it. if the OP only wants 1080P@60FPS and the cards I mentioned are perfect and still have enough power for 1440p - it would be the most cost effective solution if available.

If you dont believe me about the 7700XT vs 6800 - you can check out the most recent Intel ARC A770. Both cards are there. And where the 7700XT doesnt do well. Neither does the 6800. So both of them will suck at the same time

The higher memory bus of the 6800 should also be better when it comes to running higher resolutions so that may fair better in the long term. My money would be on the 6800 unless I was penny pinching then it would be the 6700XT or 6750XT

Finding those cards is the key issue here. I can still find them in the UK. £350 for an XFX Speedster SWFT319 6800. An 7700XT is the same price.
