I've got an odd one here

Asus B450-I, was working perfectly. Moved my 5800x into it, and now two of the 6 year USB ports don't work correctly.
USB3.0 devices work in 4 of the 6, USB 2.0 work in all of them. The middle two ports just show nothing on most devices, with some 3.0 flash drives doing the beep-boop connect/disconnect cycle

1670227929401.png

Anyone got any ideas? I'm at a loss since 2.0 devices work, I've tried uninstalling the devices in device manager and letting the drivers reinstall, but that didn't work either

Even when its beeping, nothing shows in device manager - no flicker of something appearing and disappearing, no yellow triangles etc.

Was that the board with 2700X? Same old Windows install? Did you update chipset drivers?

All four 5Gbps ports back there are from the CPU, strange that the other two work fine

Did you leave a pin in the socket back from the 2700X days?

No but that's what i'm leaning into wondering, if it might be a socket issue from the pin mod - simple debris

I just wanted to rule out other things and get suggestions before going to the effort of ripping it apart again, as i have had similar USB issues in the past from hardware swaps

I don't know about debris, but within the plastic holes the AM4 socket really is basically still what LGA sockets are, thin pins. Might have been bent by the 2700X pin mod in a way that still worked for the broken CPU but a normal CPU's pin no longer makes contact with it

Which is why some of the complaining about AM5 being LGA was pretty funny to me, yes butterfingers are a greater liability with LGA but PGA is essentially pin-on-pin contact, double the headache

I'll pull it apart in the coming days/weekend and give it a thorough cleaning. I've been having fun tweaking that PC fully - OpenRGB worked wonders for letting me control all the devices at once, that cant be ran off the external RGB controller to sync things up

you can see why reaching the CPU can be a tad annoying
1670304440031.png
1670304474693.png

(You can also see my primary PC vomiting rainbows on the reflective front panel)

Side panel on came out blurry so you get a tiny version - the little chevrons cover up the cables so well, without actually covering them
1670304516288.png

For random fun facts and tax for those offering suggestions, the PC specs:

5800x
1070Ti (3 slot spacing is gigantic for ITX)
2x16GB corsair vengeance pro 3200
512GB WD SN730 NVME
4TB WD Red mech (UNDER the GPU!)
EK 240mm AIO w/ 2x 120mm fans
2x EK 140mm intake fans
MSI max ARGB remote (lets you control ARGB via case reset button)

I can slap in 2x 2.5" drives and another NVME, all in a little* ITX case

*It's large for ITX, but small vs mATX. Perfect LAN rig.

Check your SOC and IOD voltages and maybe try a slight increase also try Enabling USB Selective Suspend in the power plan.

I'm thinking just bad USB socket. Especially if you plug and unplug from them often.

Gots the same board. Well, my kid is running it with a lidless 2700X.

Anyhow, the USB 3.0 ports on my boys case are worn out. Does the exact same thing you're describing, just not on the board. I don't think the issues we have a related to one another, but that's my best guess. Highly doubt you have a cpu pin connection issue though. Mine's been frozen on a few occasions and seems to run like a champ.

While researching Ryzen USB issues, I read some (educated) speculation on another forum (think it was overclock something) from years ago that (at least some of) the Ryzen USB issues were caused by there being too small a voltage margin implemented by AMD, which led to the IO (or whatever it is called) voltage being too low for some CPU samples and as a result the USB (since Ryzen, like Carrizo/Bristol Ridge and Kabini/Beema before it, is a SoC) being unstable with those samples. The speculation was founded on some people only experiencing USB issues with some CPUs in a certain motherboard as well as manually upping the voltage in the UEFI resolving the USB issues. I wonder if this is what OP could be experiencing.

ports on the case are always fun, even on top tier expensive cases i've had issues with those

These being mobo ports, i'm leaning more towards debris in the socket but wanted to be certain it wasnt software before delving into that much effort

That's something i've posted around the web a lot myself, ryzen 2000 series USB dropouts were commonly from the SoC restarting parts of itself - errors on the PCI-E bus made the USB ports restart, commonly from PCI-E risers but also from unstable RAM

A reseat couldn't hurt. But I'd think all the rear USB ports would have an issue, not just 2 of them.

Won't know till you try!

Don't ask questions and I wont have to lie

1670397638526.png

Took the CPU out for drinks, gave it's socket a blowjob

SAVE ME RYOBI-ONE+, YOU'RE MY ONLY SOURCE OF COMPRESSED AIR
1670399078195.png

Did not fix the issue - i'll test a bootable OS later and see if it just didnt like the CPU swap

1670409761018.png

The ports look fine

USB 2.0 devices like wireless mice dongles work
USB 2.0 wireless adaptor has its LED light up and windows goes badingbadong over and over but never shows up
usb 3.0 devices do not work (LED light flickers)
my phone, which is USB 3.0 works fine?

It's likely damage to the board since the CPU pins were fine and clean, annoying but something i doubt i'll ever fix

Nice compressor! I have their power inverter, works like a charm too.

Must have a cracked solder joint or a shitty pcb trace?? (guessing...)

Literally.

I'll update this if i ever find out the case or a solution, but i doubt i will unless i take the mobo out of the PC entirely and fluff about with spare CPUs

I suspect cracked solder joints during the board flexing. :banghead:

Good speculation here and the only thing i could add would be too much down clamp pressure when installing cpu cooler/block and the pins splaying out some. Ive seen this issue like this a few times with different modules erroring out where that was the issue. Of course, taking the block back off wont show you that problem unless you REALLY cranked it and bent the pins, otherwise they will flex back to normal. Only way to test that theory would be to back off the socket pressure a turn or 2 and see if that changes anything.

I sent in my web developer friend terry, he's good at debugging

And yes, the two "slap some wire in it" sockets are in fact damaged
1673671497162.png
Key to the story here, is that the pins came off *in* this motherboard due to liquid metal TIM getting onto them - this system had zero issues for months, but the LM weakened the sockets contacts enough they must have come out when i removed the 5800x recently

The only remaining question is: Do i slap some specs of tin foil in there and call it a day, or do I get a heatgun and desolder the socket and slap on the spare i have...

(not my image, but i have one on hand i use to store CPUs in and/or lap them)
1673671592389.png

Added copper foil into the sockets, zero change

They want $450Au for a B550 ITX board locally so i'm poking online and second hand sales now, i like my ITX baby

I think AM4 is finally entering EOL. I just checked the ITX boards in Canada and it's much the same as well. There is only one normally-priced (ie. MSRP) board the B550I Aorus AX, and it's just the last few boards in stock locally at ME.

I noticed ME has updated a lot of the ITX boards' listings to "While Supplies Last". Which is the same status they applied to the now-completely-gone 6800/6800XT/6900XT cards.

Not that $259 for the Aorus is a good price at all (literally what I paid in 2020), but it's time to decide how much you really value this ITX rig of yours, because AM5 is finally taking over.

plenty of regular boards, but few ITX

I can get one asrock consistently for about $230 Au which is... okay. kinda.

(Example listing since it has detailed specs on the page)
Buy ASRock B550M-ITX/ac ITX Motherboard [B550M-ITX/AC] | PC Case Gear Australia

You can tell what you're getting there, and it aint what i lost with the B450 going kaput
1673675101602.png

or for ~$20 less
1673675148566.png

I only wanna run an undervolted 5800x on this thing. Nothing crazy. But i dont want a board that will throttle when ambients go up, or have dumbass design decisions like the power connector being below the HDMI connector?!?
