asus notebook overheating & lag in gaming even with max 60fps

Hello everyone, Im new to these forums on the net so If Im posting on the wrong section please move the thread. THanks.
So I have an ASUS K550VX notebook laptop. It has a i7-6700HQ octa core processor and a dedicated NVIDIA GTX 950M graphics card. I've always had problems with overheating and performance. And I've been using the laptop without a battery for almost 2 years. The problem is here. I have max FPS while gaming (mostly fortnite) 60FPS but my game lags a lot. It isnt smooth at all. It feels like im playing on -30 fps but actually the nvidia overlay encounter shows 60FPS and it doesnt move. I just did a clean windows install also bought a 240GB SSD which helped to improve the performance of the PC a lot but still Im struggling on gaming. The laptop overheats while gaming. It reaches 90 celcius degrees MAX even if I play on 90% processor usage. What can be the problem? Because I have max FPS but still the game feels very bad and laggy. I used to undervolt the laptop with ThrottleStop and it did help lowering the temps a bit but still I had a lot of lag in game and it did affect my laptop performance in general. Can you guys give me any suggestions or something. I replace the thermal paste and clean the fan once per year. Please help! thanks(:
 
80% of the problem is the laptop itself. The chassis is an ultrabook style form factor even if it is 15.6". You want to get something a that has a more beefier cooling solution inside to deal with the heat.

Alternative solutions are try using a laptop cooler or prop up the back of the laptop at an angle when gaming so that airflow can circulate a little bit underneath when gaming. Theres not a whole lot you can do if buying a new laptop isnt an option. You have to make do with what you got or dont do it at all.

Is there any program which monitors cpu temps and clocks while gaming? so I can send it here and maybe I can get some more advice.

If mostly used for gaming, save up for a laptop with better cooling or better, a desktop system.
hahaa yes, sorry for the ignorance xD. All I want from you guys is to help me find a solution without buying a new laptop. If I had money I would buy one right now lol.
 
My old Asus G750 didn't have airvents at the bottom but if yours has you could try a cooling pad.
 
so you guys are saying that the problem is that my cpu throttles? and the only solution is the cooling pad? Should I post this to another thread section gaming or something because I think you're advicing only for hardware
 
You are defiantly limited with the laptop you have now friend. CPU and GPU throtling are heat related. With limited cooling like you have, it's about as good as it's gonna get.

The problem is the heat that your laptop creates while its gaming causes it to thermal throttle. Thats when you lose performance and it starts to get laggy. Laptop coolers are usually the best step forward because it keeps the air flowing underneath the laptop but if your laptops own cooling is weak to begin with even a laptop cooler might not help that much. Having a laptop cooling pad is still better than no cooling pad.

Problem is still 80% laptop.

Yeah. Those are useless, I tested one i bought from amazon then sent it back. There are youtube videos where a guy had to use blu-tack to create a proper air tight seal before it would work efficiently but even then the difference wasnt really worth the money.

A friend of mine who has experience on hardware does the thermal paste replacement and I dont know the exact thermal paste name. I asked him if its good he told me that it isnt a bad one. But I remember he didnt use a white paste it was brown or something.

I normally use Arctic Cooling Mx4 myself. But any good quality paste will work fine.
 
I have a HP laptop with similar i7 and turned off Hyperthreading, and find undervolting helps temps.
It still runs hot though.

When you say hot, what exact temps for example in gaming... And how can i turn off hyperthreading
 
Enter the Bios upon starting the laptop and look for the option to disable HyperThreading.
As for Temps The palm wrest on mine is a polished alloy which is almost hot enough to burn your hands, I haven't measured the exact temp, but throttling does occur and it is incredibly slow when it happens, even on idle it runs quite warm.
 
These laptops are really bad actually. Mine hit 100*C on gaming when I enabled turbo just for one second

You can also turn vertical sync to adaptive (and then make sure vsync is off in the game) if your GPU supports it. If it doesn't, just run the game with vsync on. Oh, and make sure you restart the laptop after enabling these settings. Turning HyperThreading and Turbo off in the BIOS also helps.

Alright man thanks for the advice. Actually, I did this today. I turned the Vsync on at the nvidia control panel and in the game and the graphics got improved but I had input delay. And when I set the laptop to best performance with turbo on and stuff i didnt have the input delay but the temp went to its max value 100 deegres. while on better performance the temp went max 90 deegres for cpu and 80 for gpu... I will try to disable turbo and hyperthreading in the bios and see if that helps.. then I will post the results... And one more thing... I dont think there is a setting to change the vsync to adaptive there is only on/off setting for it... anyways I will come here tomorrow with the results after disabling the hyperthreading... thanks

Actually now I remember that I didnt restart the laptop after changing the setting at nvidia control panel. but still I had the graphics improvement so I didnt think that the restart would've been necessary...
 
Alright man thanks for the advice. Actually, I did this today. I turned the Vsync on at the nvidia control panel and in the game and the graphics got improved but I had input delay. That mode boosts the GPU only as far as it's reasonably practical while keeping the performance consistent.

Alright so, I downloaded Nvidia inspector which allowed me to turn adaptive vsync on. I switched the vsync off in game and kept it adaptive as u said but it wasnt worth it. The game was laggy but with no input lag. when i turn vsync on in game the game isnt laggy but it has kinda an input lag or screen tearing idk how is that called. Also there wasnt an option on bios to disable HyperThreading and Turbo Boost. Do you guys have any suggestions on how can I remove the input lag in game(Fortnite)?
