Hi I hope It's not just me but does one need to be smoking crack to understand the ati softmod
install instructions listed here on this site?. It (the instructions) seem to have been translated from some other language and lost all semblence of logic in the process.
I wonder if someone knows of some instructions that don't contradict itself every other line.
that can be understood by the average english speaking person who has only about 34 years of experience with computers (got into it before dos was a thought). It's not like I havent had to muddle through very poorly writen instructions before but this is a new apex in the quest to deliver completely useless information. Sorry but I tried every possible convolution of installing the softmod and had to reinstall the ati cat driver every time to get back to a working state. Sounds good on paper but has anyone actualy made this work with a 9550?.

Tons of people. What you need to do is download the softmodded drivers, run the installer, and just let it install the drivers. It WILL yell at you, saying "DRIVERS ARE NOT WINDOWS CERTIFIED!". Ignore this and say "continue installation". Catalyst Control Center is not included with the softmod drivers, thankfully, and most settings can be controlled by ATItool (right-click the system tray icon for AA/AF.), and you gain a couple more options, such as fan control. If for some strange reason you WANT to run ATI Catalyst Control Center, download the matching catalyst driver from ATI's website, and then on installation, ONLY SELECT CATALYST CONTROL CENTER for installation. Otherwise it will overwrite the softmod lol. And a 9550 is next to pointless to unlock these days...save some money and get an X1600.

From TPU home page, click "ATI Softmod" in the left column. After this page loads, the column will expand, adding the options Download, Instructions, and FAQ to the list (I think.). Click download, and the rest is self-explanatory. And RPG711, the softmod driver won't work for you...It allows for overclocking of the 9000, 9200, 9550, and 9600, and mods the 9550 to a 9700, and a 9800SE to a 9800pro. I don't see X800 to X850 anywhere .

Well thanks much I was a bit confused and in retrospect it makes sense that the only part of that softmod down load I wanted was the driver set up. One of the replys stated that it was somewhat pointless with a 9550 as not much would be gained. Well I'm located on a small island and any vidio card is not easy to get at any price here, as this was the best that I could get in a resonably short time that's what I ended up with . I was also very doubtfull about any real gains that would be had but was absolutely amazed at both the bench mark improvement and much more by the 25% plus increase in frame rates with my fav games, card is stable at 375 core and 275 mem 3dmark 2003 went up from 2264 to 2950
but by far most important is real world very noticeable almost night and day diff in how my games run. I wonder why they don't just post the driver install seems for us oc'ing rookies it would avoid much confusion. any way once again thanks from antigua land of 80 deg year round weather.

Whats wrong with the recent 6.6 driver? Is the softmod project suspended or the maintainer on vacation, whats going on? No word about anything in the softmod news for weeks. Are we better off with a hardmod these days?
