Hi,

I got my hands on a faulty flashed XFX 5770 that gave no picture. So I tried to reflash it with the original firmware, but I got this strange error message that I can't find any info about. Has anyone seen this before? (see screenshot)

DSC_0301small.JPG

Now when I run atiflash -i there is no firmware displayed on the card, and any new retries to flash gives me the same error.

I have tried to change PCIe ports and different secondary graphics card also, but the 5770 wont get flashed.

Any suggestions what to try next?

Hi

Looks as if atifash is at a C: prompt; are able to confirm

Try using a bootable USB Flash Drive
-download atiflash; use this version: here

-go here
-download - HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 & Windows 98 System Files

click Primary Download unzip the files to a folder on your HDD; make sure your USB Flash Drive is attached to your PC; open HP USB Disk

Storage Format Tool v2.1.8 ; select create a DOS start-up disk/ select: using DOS system files located at: (these are the files you have just downloaded): browse to the files in win98boot; then start the process.

copy atiflash and #BiosName#.rom to the bootable USB flash drive

Set the motherboard bios to boot from USB *press F8 during boot; select from boot menu *if option is available; this should boot to a win98 dos prompt

Unplug any USB and other devices [*other than the USB Flash Drive] that may be attached to the PC, disable anything that may disturb the flash process

Type the following command at DOS prompt:
Look for Adapter info
atiflash -ai 0

To force flash the card
atiflash -p -f 0 #BiosName#.rom

0=Zero if card is in top PCIe slot
Note: Model Number and link for the exact vga card / hashes from back of the card would help

Edit: If the above dose not work follow this link

Thank you for your input.

I am using a bootable USB-stick, but I created it with some freeware tool. Tried another tool to create it as well, but no difference. I'm also using ATIFlash 4.07. I will try to create a boot-stick with the HP tool, but I don't think it will help. Anyhow, it's worth a try.

When flashing I tried with another card connected to a PCIex1 port via a 1x-16x riser, and also vice versa with the 5770 connected to that x1 port. Same problem both ways tried. Today I will try to use a standard PCI card as a secondary display, as well as the internal graphics card on my motherboard.

Another interesting thing is this; another computer I have doesn't detect the card at all, it's an older computer with a motherboard based on nVidia nForce4. My current computer runs a motherboard based on Intel G41.
Does this matter?

Finally, the card is found when I run atiflash -ai, I will post the results of that later today.

Even though it is found, is it possible that shorting the vBIOS chip will help me?

Hi

In my hurry to assist I forgot; Welcome to TPU

Does this matter?
As long as both motherboards have PCIe x16 2.0 or compatible it should not make any difference.

Finally, the card is found when I run atiflash -ai, I will post the results of that later today.
Should be good to flash the adapter; let us know

Even though it is found, is it possible that shorting the vBIOS chip will help me?
No need for this if the adapter has been found: [the procedure is for adapter not found]

Thank you!

I have now tried with the onboard graphics card as secondary display as well as disabling and disconnecting everything unnecessary. Still the same problem.

When I run atiflash -ai 0 I get this:
Code:
Adapter 0 (BN=01, DN=00, PCIID=68B01002, SSID=00000000)
   Asic Family : Juniper
   Flash Type : SST25VF010 (128 KB)
   No VBIOS

Markings on the card says:

HD-577A-ZN HD-577A-ZNDA VC.1
HD 5770 875M 1GB DDR5 DP HDMI DUAL DVI
PCI-E XXX

I will update this thread with a picture of the output from atiflash -ai that I ran before the card was flashed the first time.

This is what was shown before any flashing took part, adapter 1 is the one that wasn't working:

DSC_0299small.JPG

And with atiflash -ai:

DSC_0300small.JPG

What's up with that "Hybrid Images"? The previous owner had modified the BIOS to make the card work in a Mac and he said it did for some short time. But suddenly it stopped working for some reason.

PCIID was 68B8 before flashing and now it is 68B0. What's the importance of that?

Thank you for your input, it's much appreciated.

Hi

Hybrid Images
EFI [Extensible Firmware Interface] used in some motherboards to improve upon the old legacy bios.

(Possibly similar to the Graphic card version UEFI-hybrid VBIOS however once legacy bios has been updated to UEFI it is not possible to flash a legacy bios back with these) Not sure about the EFI whether it can be written to

Ok, thank you.

Didn't know that existed in graphics cards.

I guess my next step will be to try and flash the card in another computer, to rule out that the computer possibly has something that disturbs the flash process.

Hi

Didn't know that existed in graphics cards.

General info
Mac mod; 5770_vervet_netkas.efi here This may assist other member of the TPU community to assist.

It mentions "keep the original copy of the XFX5770.rom somewhere just in case something goes wrong if you need to re-flash your card to the original rom." but dose not go into detail other than the .rom modded image should be over written when flashing back the original .rom image.

Note: Could you upload/attach a zipped copy of the original vbios image you are using

This is the file i received from the guy that did the mac mod, I think it was saved from the card before it was modded. http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=52493&stc=1&d=1379498232

The card is a XXX version which has 875MHz core and 1300MHz memory clock. There are three firmwares in the database which has these clocks. One of them seems to be the one I received with the card, and it says "XXX Edition": http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/66216/xfx-hd5770-1024-091210.html

Another newer firmware matches the numbers on the card, namely this one: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/75175/xfx-hd5770-1024-100326-2.html

Does it matter which one I choose? I have tried both and the same error occurs anyway.

Hi

I have tried both and the same error occurs anyway.

Assuming have tried the vga card in a system after each flash and it has blank screen on boot

As have Flashed two other vbios images and have the original vbios image [looks fine; btw] using force flash command [atiflash -p -f 0 #BiosName#.rom] (0=top PCIe slot)
and still get following error

atiflash -ai 0

Adapter 0 (BN=01, DN=00, PCIID=68B01002, SSID=00000000)
Asic Family : Juniper
Flash Type : SST25VF010 (128 KB)
No VBIOS

*Maybe worth a try
Flash once more with the original bios, follow this link from heading Re flash
see attached SST25VF010 pin-outs below
SST25VF010.jpg

Hi

It's alive! I tried to use Atiflash 3.99 instead of 4.07. Works like a charm! Thank you for all your input!

Well done: thanks for the feedback; who would have thought 3.99, nice job :toast:

Yeah, that wasn't very obvious. Hopefully someone will find this thread if they encounter the same problem.
