Audeze has updated its popular LCD-X and LCD-XC reference headphones. Today, we examine the LCD-XC closed-back headphones to see how well it meets studio monitoring and general consumer needs. We also pair the LCD-XC (2021) with Embody's Immerse Virtual Studio plug-in for more personalized audio presets.

"At this point, you still need to have a smart phone with a front-facing camera, or any other means to take a photo of your ear. There are examples of how the photo should look, and once you are satisfied, the same link allows submission to the Embody cloud to create your own HRTF profile. This is separate from the likes of Creative's Super X-Fi, which chooses between certain groups for your best fit, and Embody is proud of generating a unique profile for every single person with a lot of granularity from what I am told."

??
As far as I know with Super X-Fi you have to take pictures of your ears and your head to make a personal profile.

The difference is the Embody HRTF is unique to your own, whereas SXFI classifies yourself profile among one of a few preset groups only.

  • Upper mids a weakness for studio monitoring but also some music genres
  • Quite expensive relative to other monitoring headphones
  • The treble range is hit or miss with some fundamentals and harmonics clashing
  • High initial clamping force and the heavy mass may cause discomfort over time
  • Ear pads are glued on and hard to replace
  • Embody IVS is slower than I would like on updating presets for headphones
$1799 for the Premium Edition. We don't recommend this product.

But Sennheiser HD 800 S Reference Headphone System is OK, as is:

Nuraphone by Nura

Shure SRH1540

Austrian Audio Hi-X65

Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro

Don't buy the Premium edition, it is just not economically practical. The Creator Pack is what you want, and buy accessories separately as needed.
