Bad Fortnite Performance

What's up guys. I'm having an issue in Fortnite where performance is just bad and I can't figure out why. I can get 150 FPS but what's killing me is I get frames drops down under 50 FPS which makes the game become laggy or stuttery. I'm playing at 3840x2160 on High Settings but I even tried down to 2560x1440 with no real improvemnet. Anyone else having this issue ?

Specs:

Ryzen 7 5800X Stock
32GB DDR4 3200MHz
Gigabyte RTX 3070 Ti

There's a lot of things one could try, but dropping the resolution right down to something like 720p as a starting point can help you get an idea where the problem is. Especially so if the extreme frame drops persist.

Also, could it just be a map issue and / or lots of players on at once? I don't play this game so can't suggest game related specifics.

I have a pretty similar setup and I don't have this issue. I'd start with checking your RAM and look for anything strange in Windows error log/event viewer.

This literally has nothing to do with Intel so why mention them

RAm has been tested with no issues and I don't have any errors in event viewer

You don't have anything running the background that could be interfering? I would turn off all unnecessary programs as well. I had this issue once way back when and it was actually my creative software spiking CPU usage at random times. It could possibly be something not related to Fortnite at all.

I play PUBG with competitive settings at 4K, getting ~200FPS normally but when there are lot of smokes, FPS drop to 50-60 too :/

What's going on with GPU and CPU usage during the spikes?

Do you have any overlays enabled?

Common performance vampires for me:
Control Flow Guard, Standby Ram List (get standby list cleaner), Windows Defender/ VBS (shut off virtualization this will turn it off), Overlays, Power Settings, NVidia Profiles trying to force AF/AA/MSAA modes, Some BIOS with Re-Bar enabled (just use above 4G).

I experienced the same issue, and did the following to reduce the lag/stuttering:

- Disable ray tracing
- If DLSS is enabled, use DLSS Performance mode, or turn it off altogether
- Try DirectX 11 over DirectX 12 Beta

Fortnite is very sensitive to IPC and RAM, so you will have much better 1% low with fast CPU and RAM (much less frame rate drop).

Try tuning your 5800X with Curve Optimizer and tighten the timings on your RAM will help

I played Fortnite like for one time a bit seriously, at the time I think I might have had a 1080 Ti or 2080 and I should have been doing UHD 60p or something. It's been long, I can't remember but I do remember getting around 90-100 FPS easily at those settings. It was an OC'd 7900X alongside.

Your current setup is way beyond that, I don't see a way of suffering FPS unless something is definitely wrong. Try defaulting Nvidia Control Panel and run a malware scan with Malwarebytes.

Looks like it might be my RAM. When I manually set the clock to 3200 and timing to the default Fortnite crashes PC but if I enable XMP fornite will load just fine but performance has bad drops

RAM is certainly a possibility. I suggest running with one stick to see if the drops aren't as severe. I guess overall performance will drop though as it won't be in dual channel anymore.

Might be unrelated but I watched some Youtube tech video (might have been Dawid) commenting that with extremely high end hardware at low enough settings, Fortnite is always a stuttery mess and that's a game engine problem, rather than any specific hardware. It sounded like it was a known thing among people who benchmark the game on a regular basis.

Does Fortnite run better at 4K, with DSR, or with much higher graphics settings?

Edit: Nevermind, I remembered it incorrectly. It was GTAV that stutters like crazy at higher framerates.

I'm suspecting those OLoY sticks to be kinda finicky, just like one Neo Forza kit I have. They tend to use some lower binned Hynix dies on those, which a fine amount of the time ends up in sticks not being able to hit target speeds properly / at said latencies. It's kind of cheap for a reason from what I've seen.

Toy around with timings, relax them, run the memory at 1:1 IF with the CPU if you can.

Timing already is pretty low end 18-20-20-20 and they are micron I believe

I may just buy a much better set and see if that makes a difference. Only issue 32GB is not cheap
