Bad psu ruined motherboard?

Hey guys I have already ordered another psu and a motherboard before posting here but just wanted some clarity..

My specs are as follows.

MSI MPG B550 gaming plus (RIP)

2 Sticks of Corsair Ram 3600 mhz 32 GB

R9 5900x

RTX 3060 12 gb

AIO cooled with a cooler master cooler.

Now this is what happened... So I have always felt that I needed a new PSU to replace My RM 850x Corsair unit. So I did that an ordered a Thermal Take Tough Power GF1 750w. After getting after thing plugged in, I turned on the PSU and hit the power button and heard a pop and then the lights went out on the PC. I tried to turn it on again and the lights flickered off and then nothing. I tried the old psu and nothing as well, I am writing here looking for reassurance moreless. Like what happened I have never had this issue? Will a new MOBO and PSU solve my problem or did I ruin 1100 dollars worth of hardware? LOL rip my PC

You did replace all the cables when swapping, right?

When will the manufacturers decide on a standard.....

Do you have a multimeter? You could test that the PSU is still outputting 12v.

I'm afraid everything could be dead then, perhaps not the CPU tho. No way to know until you try again, this time replacing all the cables.

See? this is why regular non-modular squid PSUs are better.

PSU is probably fine, it often kills everything except itself when something like that happens.

Well things tend to fry when you send the incorrect voltages through them. I know about that.

ALL of the pin layout of those PSUs are different, so of your components might be compromised, not only your PSU and motherboard. May be your GPU and CPU are fine.

I don't.

I am not as concerned to save the psu as I am my CPU And GPU. Is it safe to say those are unaffected?
Was just to see if a protection killed the PSU in heroic sacrifice...

Looking at those diagrams, I cannot understand how he could have killed the motherboard with the wrong pin out. The PSU side of the EPS and PCIe connectors are identical, and the apparent PSU side ATX connectors are physically different. I hope he didn't plug a connector into a female port a different size than the male connector?

Is there any way I can look at the components and tell if they are bad lol

PSUs have protections regarding to power and current, but in normal circumstances. When you short a PSU via wrong cable, you also reduce the success rate of those protections to be activated. During the short, a voltage can be sent where it shouldn't be until the PSUs protections are activated.

If there was any sata / molex powered components in the system they are probably gone ( SATA HDD/SSD, Fan controler, RGB controler, fans connected to those controllers [Fan it self or RGB] etc. )

Is there any way I can look at the components and tell if they are bad lol

I did not do that lol

Only way is to test is trying them with a known working system ( one by one ) or testing with replacement motherboard and PSU.

well this guy fried his PC when reusing modular cables from a different brand of PSU

I guess your entire PC is compromised, you may risk damaging new hardwares if you try your compromised hardwares on them too...

On a side note upon opening the pc I could smell odor from the fans but nothing else really smells like that. And if the rgb is affected would my aio still be good?

Should be ok. I doubt you created a short long enough to damage the cables.

Does the AIO take power direct from the PSU (molex/sata), or later nlu from the motherboard?

We can't be sure the extend of the damage for sure. Unless all components are being tested. You can ask to MSI's RMA department about the extend of the damage on motherboard. From there, we can speculate what is also broken or not.

AIO's RGB might be effected if it is connected to the motherboard's RGB header and 12V was surged where 5V should have been sent ( We can learn this, if MSI's RMA department can give a detailed report on motherboard's damage ). If AIO RGB was connected to Cooler Master's RGB controller which is powered through molex, it is mostly compromised.

So here is my conclusion there was a molex adapter I failed to use when powering the sata drives to the psu therefore It took my rgb and my fans out and my hdds along with the motherboard. I am hoping it stopped there.

I also hope that the extend of the damage stops there.

Please never mix power cables between PSUs again, even if the brand is same. Different models in same brand might have different pin layouts.

Bummer, what was the reason for swapping out the RM850X? It was likely a better psu.

To add furthermore I did have cable mod cables hooked up to the cables that go into the psu. Wouldn't that have saved my components kind of absorbing the shock?

No the pinout would still be different coming from the psu side and the actual cables don't really do anything to save your hardware just melt if you buy trash ones.
