Best inexpensive 1TB NVMe drive?

I've always bought Samsung, SK hynix or Solidgm NVMe drives and have had outstanding luck with them. Now I'm upgrading my last Z87 rig to X99 and need a 1TB Gen 3 drive. What's the consensus here for the best bang for the buck for a 1TB system drive in a PC with an ASRock X99 Extreme4/3.1 mobo? What's close to a Samsung 970 Evo Plus (I have a few of those in use) without the Samsung price penalty?

I'd go with something like the WD SN580 Blue 1TB. It is PCIe gen 4 so it should provide good speed on a gen 3 motherboard.

I dunno, prices change all the time and there are plenty of temporary discounts, especially at this time of year (Black Friday). I have some Sabrents, Samsungs, ADATAs, Silicon Powers, probably a few others I don't remember. I've been buying aftermarket SSDs for over ten years now I don't think there's any clear winner that stands on the podium more than a couple of months.

For ordinary usage cases (and this includes almost all gaming since those are almost all reads not writes) I don't think it really matters that much. I just try to buy what's on sale and hope it doesn't run too hot.

Especially for Gen 3 drives, these are all approaching what I consider to be commodity level components. I'd just buy something from a company that I have a little trust in rather than save $4 with some new/unknown brand. There is more performance variance for the Gen 5 parts but Gen 3 is old. The NAND chips are proven, the disk controller is proven, the firmware is proven.

After a bit of reading I went with the KLEVV CRAS C925 1TB for $66 and I'll have it tomorrow. I have a 1TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus in a portable enclosure and that's going into the upgrade PC. The KLEVV will go into the enclosure until I finally get around to putting my 12700K/ ASRock Z690 Steel Legend WiFi back together (had to RMA the mobo that my 13600KF took out when it went poof. All the parts are here but I never got around to reassembling it. The replacement 13600KF went into another Z690 Steel Legend WiFi I just buttoned up tonight. I had a 12600K & 12700K stashed away). I'll be able to use the faster speed of the KLEVV with the Z690 plus I have an unopened Solidgm P44 Pro 2TB on hand as well.
