Better buy, 5800x3d vs 5950x

I already have a 13700k as a decent gaming cpu, and repurposing AMD system for general purpose. The 5950x has been knocked down to the same price as the 5800x3d.

*shrug* Depends on what said general purpose is. But, on average, more cores (and somewhat higher clocks) will probably be better than the 3D cache for the vast majority of non-gaming tasks.

General purpose = 5900XT or 5950X (both are 16 core CPUs)
Gaming = 5800X3D

Ryzen X3D CPUs (5800X3D, 7800X3D) are weaksauce CPUs that game well. These products are one-trick ponies. They game well and that's about what they do. Owning a 13700K you are going to notice that outright.

What's the current CPU and specs of said PC? you need to be more specific than general purpose lol if just YT, browsing, office etc, most of this can be done without the need of 16c/32t and the 5800x3d has no benefits over a standard 5800x or even 5700x aside from gaming, whic assuming from the info you provided it won't be used for gaming or perhaps at best just casual gaming, is it worth the cost in that case? if it's the 3800x system in your specs and as you say is now going to be used for general purpose computing, I would personally say just leave it as is, no point spending $250+ on a system with a 3800x for general purpose as that CPU is still fine for a hella lot of tasks

If it's not for gaming then get the 5900XT/5950X without question - that will be much better for productivity and work loads.

CAD, Simulations, some 3d modeling and post processing.

I'd rather upgrade later but definitely before never, so I figured it's not too bad to upgrade now before 5XXXs are out of stock for good.

5950X is what I was leaning towards and just making sure.

Yeah for those workloads 5950X all the way. It's gonna murder the 5800X3D at those. Keep an eye out for the 5900XT too. Basically same CPU (turbo is 100MHz lower, lol just enable PBO anyway) and comes with a wraith prism (good backup) in the box. It should be ever so slightly cheaper as well, if not, 5950X all the way.

Ok I had a similar question as well. I currently have a 5700x. I was wondering if I should get a 5800X3D or a 5900x or 5950x? My current system would stay the same I would be just upgrading the cpu only. I do game and it runs just fine. But I don't do anything task wise except tons of open firefox tabs on 2 monitors for work. And my current cpu can handle this with ease. Or should I just leave it alone and not upgrade at all. Not sure what is my best option.

5700x3d would be your best option to get the last bit of gaming performance you can on that dead AM4 socket, saying that, with a 6750xt not sure how much improvement you would see for $200

To me, the 5950x is the best bet, even for gaming. Here why:
- Your video card is really what will define your perf in games anyway. You may get 15% more perf in some games with the 5800x3D, but upgrading your video card will get you 200%
- As an overall CPU, the 5950x is a monster compared to any other 5xxx
- More and more games make better usage of multi cores

For those reasons, to be future proof, I opted for the 5950x.

Why a 5700X3D over the 5800X3D? The 6750xt I have is pretty underrated card I only play native 1440 or 1080 depends on the game with pretty decent fps overall. Wasn't sure if It was worth it. I'm also not worried about the cost.

Gaming wise there is very little between them apart fromthe $50-60 price difference, 5800x3d is also lower stocked than the 5700x3d, I think AMD did this intentionally to phase out the 5800x3D and replace it with the 5700x3D, you will be hard pressed to find a huge difference with your 6750xt, I would personally hold on to that system until you are ready to upgrade to AM5 and ddr5, new GPU etc I am in a similar position with also a 5700x and a RX 6800, as nice as it would be to experience the 3D cache, I just can't justify it, would be at least £100 out of pocket after factoring in selling my 5700x, would the minimum FPS uplift be worth that £100? likely not, but we all know how the the upgrade itch goes

. I kind of wanted to try 3Dcache as well. But truth is I really like my 5700x and paired with my current card it so far has been great. I think I will do the same keep it. I will wait till maybe AM6? or late AM5 to upgrade. Thank you for the advise.

The 5950X is 292 usd at newegg right now pretty hard to beat still offers fantastic MT performance and good enough gaming performance.

Just get the 5950X if you are going to repurpose an AM4 system. Not sure what cpu you had in it before.

5950x. Also if your doing 60fps gaming 5950x is fine with a decent GPU.

What, for better yields?

Wouldn't it still make more sense to take the better binned chips and sell them for more? Unless they're simply shutting the line down and are selling off what didn't make the cut to 5800x3d.

Very true @oxrufiioxo and I have similar builds with the Ryzen 5700X. We we also wondering if we should either go X3D or in my case also thinking 5900X or 5950X. But the gains we would see is not worth the price. Now say AMD comes out with some last minute X3D better than a 5800X3D or some 59XX variant better than the 5950X then in my case I might upgrade at that point.

Yeah, I have both a 5950X and 5800X both are still super solid for gaming as long as you have a 3080/6800XT level gpu or lower at 1440p..... It also does fine with a higher tier card at 4k.

I really only swapped to a 7950X3D because it was cheap and a better fit for my 4090 on my 3080ti system which games at 1440p it would be fine with either of the 5000 series chips. For 1080p high refresh the 5000X3D chips are definitely worth it though for anyone who games like that or if you have a 4070ti super/7900XT or better.

I was playing at 1080p I recently just bought a 1440p monitor knowing my card well is not a 4K card at all. And to be honest my system holds up to the games I play. So I have both options depends on the game.
