Better LGA1151 CPUs possible? (get a 7700 now or wait?)

I'm building a new PC: deciding between 7600 and 7700. There are some decent arguments for both options (also not related to price and performance).

The issue is: when I was planning this build for the first time, I though Kaby Lake is the last generation of performance-oriented desktop consumer chips.
Now (because of Ryzen) it seems at least one new generation could appear and it'll be 6C/12T...

I'm pretty sure Intel can give this CPU single-core performance of 7700K, which would result in performance way better than that of 6800K (and any current Ryzen). I might be interested. ;)

Thing is though: will it be compatible with 200-series chipsets?
What do you think? Or maybe there are some leaks I've missed? :)

Sadly, I can't wait with this new PC, but I could certainly survive a few months with a cheap i3 (or even a G4560).

There is no way they could put a 6C/12T chip on LGA1151, it psychically isn't possible. The best LGA1151 will see is maybe a slight clock speed bump.

So at this point, if you want something better to compete with Ryzen, then just get Ryzen. The only other option would be to wait for the Skylake-X and KabyLake-X, but those will be on LGA2066.

Why is it impossible? I must have missed something.

I'm not interested in competing with Ryzen. Why would I be? :)
Ryzen is not an option. I'm only considering Intel (and only LGA1151).
I just feel that this is not the best moment to buy a PC, but I don't have much choice - I need it before May*.
But since I could tolerate a weaker CPU for next few months, there is the option of saving $150-200 now and getting a new and shiny 6C/12T when/if it becomes available at the end of the year.

*) I just ordered the case and ETA is 25.04. :/ I have a lot of time to think about the parts...

The socket isn't wired to support more than 4 cores.
Mhmm... I didn't know that.
Can you share a source? Ideally from Intel.
I haven't read this kind of technical documentation for a while. That'll be fun. ;)

Just look up the white papers and pinouts for LGA1151. The wiring to support more cores just isn't there.
