Bigger is better? Not necessarily.

Remember those Intel processors with lots of heat and leakage and whatever else nasty and not nice? Well, Intel has been working hard and has come through with what should make a lot of people happy - Penryn. Yes, Penryn.

Although it may sound like some new type of viagra pill, in reality it's Intel's new 45 nm architecture. To fully appreciate Penryn's low power consumption, just check out some of the numbers:

a Prescott in 45 nm = 25 to 30 watts of heat
a Pentium-M in 45 nm = 5 watts or less...

A prescott is still a prescoot though- A space heater.

Put an Athlon 64 on the 45 nm process and check out the consumption

That pentium M does looks sexy though.I thought they were already having problems with currents circuit jumping on the 90 nm chips....

The Prescotts are good heaters, my P4 would Idle at what my new 64 does on full load. And as Wazz said, the Pentium M's do look promising, I was looking into one of those where they are so great at gaming, but in pretty much everything else, they suck. If Intel does a bit of work to them , like have dual channel support on native boards in get a faster FSB. They may just be the next best gaming cpu.
