Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a persistent black screen issue with my RX 6700 XT (Biostar) during gaming sessions. The black screen typically occurs after about 30 minutes of play. Here’s a summary of what I’ve tried so far and my current situation:

  1. BIOS Update and Flashing:
I initially flashed a BIOS update that wasn’t even meant for my GPU—the part number didn’t match—but I force-installed it anyway. This update capped the core clock at around 650 MHz, even though the default should be about 2424 MHz. Later, I reverted to my old BIOS version; however, the black screen issue still occurs with the original BIOS.
  2. MSI Afterburner Settings:
I’ve used MSI Afterburner to adjust overclocking settings and increase the power limit, yet I’m unable to push the core clock above 650 MHz. I’ve also verified that my Windows power settings are set to High Performance and cleared CMOS, but nothing seems to overcome the frequency limitation.
  3. Potential Causes Considered:
I suspect that either an incompatible BIOS (or its inherent limitations) or another underlying issue (like power delivery or thermal throttling) might be causing the problem. I’ve also considered trying a BIOS from another manufacturer (for example, an ASRock BIOS) since I noticed some forum discussions where users experimented with cross-flashing similar GPUs. However, I’m concerned about potential incompatibility and the risk of “bricking” the card.
My Questions:
  • Has anyone experienced a similar issue with a Biostar RX 6700 XT?
  • If you have tried using a BIOS from a different manufacturer (e.g., ASRock), what was your experience, and do you have any recommendations on safely performing such a flash?
  • Are there any additional troubleshooting steps or settings (in MSI Afterburner or elsewhere) that I should try to both resolve the black screen and unlock the proper core clock?
Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!
