Frame rate would come down a bit so it would depend on what you are getting now for FPS. If it is well beyond 144 FPS, then it should be fine with the 4k at 120 FPS or better I would guess. It also seems like a lot of monitor for a aged system. Maybe better to save the money and spending on a budget for a rig upgrade.

Can just get the monitor and then set the games you play to 1080p until you get a new rig

IMHO, if you're an esports player, and it would appear that you are, I would stay away from 4k.

There's only 6GB of VRAM on a 980ti, and it will suffer greatly even in those titles above 1440p...perhaps drops to below 30fps.

I would stick to what you have, upgrade your system, and then complement it with a new monitor if need-be...but what you have in that department is pretty much what I recommend to most people.

If you're going to buy an oled, I would suggest a 1440p qd-oled of whichever your preference. MSI has some good choices, but there are others as well (especially if it's not your money :) ).

PC is 2K, 4K is TV (standards)...

... get a 1440p 27", not too big nor small, perfect in all games.
