It had a hitachigst HDD 60GB 5v 1.0A, but it died last night, I have here a 120GB sata3 ssd, I read 120GB is the max for sata on this laptop however, I notice this original ATA/IDE drive uses this foxconn conector as on the picture, it reads foxconn and 0321 can i buy a similar type pasiv adapter to connect to the sata drive to the mobo and finish this? if so where can i find it? I couldn't find it on ebay, can i only use ATA HDDs with this laptop?

check the manual of the mainboard first. prebuild pc, laptops and tablets also ahve manuals / You may provide more details

when in question get a similar drive as the old one - connector type - byte sector sizes and such

the case refers to an inspiron 4000 which is compatible with latitude c600 the pc has a c600 mobo i replaced it long ago.
i checked the manual for changing parts and on the part thats for swaping the hdd only says to remove the screw and pull down, it doesn't say what adapter is using.

i can't find info anywhere about it nor ebay nor startpage even when typing the numbers and brand on the pasiv adapter, I found foxconn sata cables but not this.

it used a 10GB originaly, this HDD that broke was on a fujitsu laptop from 2 years later (2003)
I read the manual it is not too specific and it doesn't mention this pasiv adapter at all.

That's the problem with many mobiles, proprietary stuff, go find a 2.5 PATA/IDE SSD or another 7200 rpm HDD so it can be secured correctly in the chassis and not be flopping around.

Then there is the crude method below.

pasiv adapter came with the laptop is not loose and ya I could buy a pata ssd, I just wanted to use what i already had and thought maybe buying a 5$ adapter would solve it, this adapter is for PATA to 22pinx2 something. then I'll buy the new SSD

and put the little adapter you have on the ide side. It will work, but it really is time to get something newer.

Freakin Dells. I used to hate keeping up with those adapters they had for 44 pin ide...

The issue is going from sata to ide/pata which would make a sata based drive stick out the side of it or not go in

True. It is definitely a kludge, and is half-assed at best. I've done it though. It will work (assuming he can get it wedged in there).

SATA SSDs do not work with a laptop that old. If you a solid state replacement, buy a Compact Flash to IDE 44 pin adapter and a CF card. Both are worth more than a 2004 vintage and earlier laptop are worth, unless this machine is mission critical or for a retro project, it's a writeoff
