Hi guys.

I am literally minutes from finishing my first ever build (Ryzen 3950x + Asus RTX 2080Ti), but now i am getting confused in regards of the PHANTEKS SLEEVED EXTENSION CABLE COMBO i've bought for my rig:
1579734474665.png

Specs:

Length
19.68in (500mm)
Wire AWG
18AWG, 2.1mm(Rohs)
Sleeve Tube
PP Material
Insulation Resistance
20M ohm @ 200VDC
Short/Open Determinant
20K ohm

My PSU is the Corsair RM850x, which (from the limited info i managed to obtain of the internet) also utilizes 18AWG wiring per this link off of TomsHardware:

Modular Cables
DescriptionCable CountConnector Count (Total)GaugeIn Cable Capacitors
ATX connector 20+4 pin (600mm)1118-20AWGYes
4+4 pin EPS12V (650mm)2218AWGYes
6+2 pin PCIe (600mm+150mm)3618AWGYes
SATA (500mm+110mm+110mm+110mm)1418AWGNo
SATA (520mm+110mm+110mm)2618AWGNo
Four-pin Molex (450mm+100mm+100mm+100mm)2818AWGNo
FDD Adapter (+100mm)1120AWGNo
AC Power Cord (1430mm) - C13 coupler1116AWG-

Question #1: Would it be ok to use these extensions with my PSU in this case?

Another thing that got me confused was the fact that Corsair are using gen 3 on some of their PSU's and gen 4 n others, when it comes to cable connections. From my understanding it only affects the 24 pin main power connector. My PSU is gen 4. Here is the difference between gen 3 and 4:

1579733111365.png

Question #2: The change only seems to affect the "PSU END" of the cable, which makes me believe that the "MOBO END" is the same on both, and should not affect which kind of extension i need to look after - the one above seems to be compatible regardless of gen 3 or gen 4 right?

And last but not least, the stock PCIe power connector cables coming with my Corsair PSU, are of this type (ONE 8-pin end at the "PSU END" splitting into TWO x 6+2pin cable ends at the "MOBO/GPU END"):

1579733593808.png

Where as the sleeved PCIe extension cables coming with my Phanteks kit are TWO individual/seperate single cable extensions:

1579733899155.png

Maybe a dumb question (better to be save than sorry when having used nearly 5000$ on a new rig though):

Question #3: Do i just connect the TWO single PCIe cables coming with my sleeved kit to each of the two "MOBO/GPU ENDS" on my double headed stock PCIe cable from Corsair? I don't really see other ways to do it, as long as the 2 sleeved extensions are single ones, and not a Y-type 2 in 1 cable like the stock one. Unless i connect the sleeved extensions into two seperate slots on the back of my PSU (it has more than one PCIe slot). What i'm trying to say/ask is basically if it makes any difference if the two PCIe ends going into the GPU comes from a single cable splitting into 2 ( Y ) compared to coming from 2 seperate cables ( I I ).

Hope it all makes sense. Sorry for the lenghy thread to what i bet are dead simple questions for somebody with a little more experience in building than me.

Looking forward to hear from you guys.

Thanks!

As far as I know extensions can be used with any brand or type of atx psu. You just don't want to use cables from different power supplies.

This is also my understanding (with the sparse experience i have though) - but a Facebook user made me aware (afraid) i could wreak havoc on my components, by miss-matching wire gauges for example. Which made me worry i might be missing other relevant stuff (which i don't know of) before i start to use extensions (and possibly fry almost 5K$ of components!)? The wire gauge at play here is matched (18-20 AWG for PSU and 18 AWG for cable extensions) so i guess that part is ok (?) - but apart of thay, are there other things i should be aware of?

I doubt even that would matter honestly the cable should handle any wattage or current that would be going through it on a mainstream platform.... I could see buying cheap Chinese no name cables for like an overclocked X299 or TRX40 system with all the pcie slots occupied by high current gpus being a problem though.

All the protections are built into the PSU not the cable so unless using super shady cables you should be fine.

Okay cool, nice to know! Thanks.

What do you think in regards of question 2 and 3?

I never use and personally hate daisy chain pcie cables. I would use 2 separate cables. So basically connect the 8 pin extensions to the 8 pin part of the pcie cable.

This is a big reason I chose the Seasonic ultra prime titanium 850 over the Corsair AX850 even though they're both made by Seasonic. The cables.

They are 6+2 pin, not 8 pin (if i understand you correctly - and if it matters) - i don't have any single (not daisy chained) PCIe cables coming with my PSU - all 3 look like this:

1579736928003.png

So to make it clear, you want me to plug two PCIe cables into my PSU, leaving me with four x 6+2 pin connectors at the other end - but then only use one of the two 6+2 connectors coming out of each cable, and leave the daisy chained second ones alone? Or...?

That's what I would do personally. Drawing 300 watts from a single pcie cable sounds sketchy to me lol.
Apparently 1080 ti so probably 2080 ti lose performance when using daisy chain cables.

Congrats on the build btw hope to see some pics when you get it all finished in the my PC ATM thread .

Solution "D" right?

Are there any differences in these setups anyway?

Nice art! super creative... I would definitely go with option D for a 2080 ti

B would also be fine if not using the extensions.
Okay, just wanted to be 100% sure i got you. Thanks again for the help mate, really appreciate it!

Ahh and last thing, it makes no difference at all which of the 2 ends of the daisy chained cable i use no? Both the "primary" and the "secondary" head, will work the same right?
