Display panel recommendation for low brightness and BFEP

Hi everybody, I have decided to buy a new monitor, a 27"-1440p-180Hz is the target, but I'm concerned with what panel my eyes can actually sustain.
Let me explain, I suffer from noticeable BFEP, that thing where you see "stars/dots" when looking at the sky but it also applies to bright light surfaces, and I have a couple of "floaters", which are also more noticeable in a bright environment. For this reason, I use prescribed blue light glasses and keep my display at very low brightness/contrast level with default dark themes.
Finally, I use my pc for both gaming and programming.

With all this in mind, my current question is what sort of display panel should I aim for. I've always used budget IPS panels, which means I don't know if anything else would be much better for me.

Contrary to what I believed to be true, many users suggest that OLED would still be ok with low brightness/contrast and a darker environment, but at the same time they aren't recommended for programming or displaying walls of text for several hours.

A popular recommendation for 1440 27" is the AOC Q27G3XMN, which is a mini led VA panel with nice HDR capabilities. Thing is, from my understanding this is because it can reach high level of brightness, which is the opposite of what I would want to use, in other words I fear that I would be paying for a premium feature that's useless to me. Should I still aim for a great SD VA panel ?

What about IPS? In this case Amazon is offering a nice deal (230 euro) for the GS27QXA, a monitor with 240Hz... or maybe something else from MSI, which should have a better display like the G274QPX (240Hz for 300+ euro) or the 274QRF (180Hz for 250 euro). Notice that I don't play competitive games, so my use cases for 240Hz would be limited to multi frame generation.

Any help or personal experience would be really appreciated

Gigabyte make great panels and are usually priced well. MSI seem to be trying really hard. AOC have never been a good experience for me.

Low brightness guy reporting in:

• Both IPS and VA are perfectly viable for your tasks. Unless the display is borked, it'll not be too bright if you set it to low/minimum brightness.
• Even if the display itself is way too bright you can still dial less blue (or even white?) via GPU driver settings.
• IPS panels are usually better with GtG and smearing reduction compared to VA panels. Not always the case but it's a common disease in VA monitors to have ghosting and smearing issues. For the life of me can't remember any VA based monitor that doesn't suck but they certainly exist. At least in the 3440x1440 category.

So you should mainly focus on the panel quality. Difference between 180 and 240 Hz is very subtle and paying a 60+ USD premium for this seems unnecessary, especially if the 240 Hz option ends up an overclocked panel. I can't help with your specific request as I'm a strictly non-1440p guy (my eyes and head hurt if I sit closer than 4 feet, or 120 cm to the display and 1440p at 27" (the biggest size for a reasonable price) is absolutely useless from this distance; and yes, it's 2025 and software is still allergic to non-integer scaling so I use 1080p@100% or 2160p@200% for that matter).

My current monitor, MSi G2712, isn't the newest one and it's 1080p but it's awesome for gaming. If MSi include the same or better quality in their current 1440p panels then I might as well recommend going for it.

I'm tempted by that Gigabyte, it seems to be relatively new so there aren't many reviews but the specs and price are there!

I agree with your sentiment, and that's why I fear most modern features would be wasted on "us" if we have to use low brightness and proper color calibration.
