does recording game footage with msi afterburner even make sense?

so i am not impressed by it's of functionality, i mean you can't even record in mainstream formats like mp4 (only avi / mkv and latter is pretty useless considering not many video editors support it) and even with 50% quality file size is huge like 2gb for 7mins clip, also shows up a weird recording bar below fps overlay, not sure why. I am thinking of starting using obs (just installed it) and it looks well improved from what i saw few years ago but i don't wanna use shadowplay as GFE is a bloated mess (runs too many unnecessary things in background), so is there a better option than obs? i gave up on bandicam because it would cause certain games to not launch and even won't hook to lots of them. Is Dxtory or fraps still revelant?

? you dont even need to use shadowplay in regards to OBS so this sentence:

makes 0 sense. I don't even install GFE.

As for afterburner having a recording function, thats news to me. I use OBS for everything, its the most flexible software I've ever found.

afterburner's recording feature predates shadowplay. rivatuner/afterburner had a place, for many people. ive used it to screenshot, & record video.

it might not make sense for YOU to use it, but not all GPU's have shadowplay, & more options is rarely a bad thing.
Also, as mentioned above, when using OBS, any recording software is a redundancy.

AVI is a mainstream CONTAINER format. And in the end, that's all the avi/mkv is, a container. You can record in any format you want(I personally use NVENC H.264).

Because you have the option to show that bar enabled, you can turn it off.

The NVEnc sucks royal ass when it comes to bitrate, doing software will roughly half a video's size given the same quality preset.
I'd only use it for streaming/recording; I always manually run everything through Handbrake before I upload. Then again I have a 3900X so might asw use that ...

i'll disagree there, there is a learning curve to it. It's not terrible but compared to shadowplay there is a lot more steps involved to streaming from it

yes, all major ones i know support it like bandicam, obs etc.

Then change the format you are using to encode. Again, I use NVENC H.264 and it allows bitrate adjustment.

It is in Rivatuner statistics server. It's Show Own Statistics or something like that.

ok, i changed it to nv12 and mkv, hopefully it's all good now, i don't see bitrate, only quality percentage option

ok i figured it out but it doesn't listed them in simplistic language, how to add external encoder though?

This applies to 99% of all software. If you mean a bit more steep than others, only slightly because there is a ton of help available for it. Just ask any new streamer that doesnt know what a mouse button is.
