DVI to HDMI adapter doesn't work

Hey, so here's the thing I have a set up where I have two monitors and PC and well as my PS3. One of my monitors is connected permanently to the PC, the other alternates between both the imput of the PS3 and my PC I want to be able to switch easily between them without having to keep unplugging the cable. The monitor has DVI and VGA imputs

I have spent quite a lot of cables and adapters off ebay to try and get this to work, and eventually thought about the following set up

However I am really gutted that this doesn't work, but what is strange is that there is signal getting to the monitor, for example when I tried to plug in the HDMI -HDMI cable into the computer, it does make the connect sound, and the first monitor flicks off for a second like its about to register the second monitor, but then the 2nd monitor remains blank and says no signal. the LED light on the HDMI splitter also is lit

Can anyone advice why this doesn't work? Could it be down to a faulty adapter because surely it should work fine?

thanks

Can you provide a cut-sheet or link to that cable? Is it auto-sensing, or is there a manual switch?

Is it supposed to support multiple inputs (as opposed to multiple outputs)?

I think Sasqui is right here.

the LED light on the HDMI splitter also is lit

A splitter is going to duplicate the output 3 times. You need a switch. You can not use a splitter in reverse to try and make a switch out of it.

So if you really bought a splitter you need something more like a hdmi kvm switch.

Sorry I should have said its not a splitter then, but a switch with allows you to select 3 different imputs. what I meant by the LED being lit is there are 3 LEDs to show you which imput is active.
Here is the link to the switch I bought http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Qual...ion_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item589f4c2ca2

also it works fine when used on the TV so that part is not faulty, but I have a feeling maybe the HDMI/DVI adapter is?

Either that or simply my monitor doesn't like it?

thanks

You can test that by plugging one of your consoles right into the adapter then into the display. What kind of adapter is it?

How old is the display? The display may need to support HDCP.

OK I just tried the PS3 direct to the monitor using an HDMI-HDMI cable and the adapter and it does not work either. The display is just over a year old, and I have been using a DVI-HDMI cable to connect the PS3 to it which works fine?

It's a DVI male to HDMI female adapter

So it doesn't have the 2 pins above and below the long connector? It's probably pinned out to DVI-D but it's probably DVI-I. I suspect there is an issue with HDCP or DDC. What model is the monitor that you're using?

I just looked it up real quick and you do have HDCP on the display (HDCP stands for Hi-Def Content Protection,) it's a form of DRM.

DDC stands for Display Data Channel which informs the device about what the monitor is capable of. DDC can be disabled and can cause many issues on DVI without an adapter. Can you test another device through the DVI-HDMI adapter just to verify that it's the adapter? You may be using an adapter for a video card that uses some DVI dual-link pins for audio so it may not work correctly.

Also keep in mind, that doing it this way, you're losing audio off the HDMI cable, so unless you have audio coming off the device somewhere else, you'll only get an image once it's working.

Either way, it sounds like the adapter to me. I would get a standard DVI-I to HDMI adapter.

I probably should have checked already but I just looked at the adapter listing I bought off ebay it's stated as a "DVI-D Dual Link Male to HDMI Female Adapter Connector" So is that the issue and I need a DVI-I adapter instead? But the DVI cable that does work is DVI-D? Yeah I already have audio from the PS3 via RCA cables and speakers connected direct to the PC so thats not an issue.

I don't really have anything else to test the adapter with, but its not a problem to get a new adapter because its pretty cheap, which may be the reason my existing one does work!

thanks

Just a final question, you recommend me to get a DVI-I to HDMI adapter, but I just checked the back of my monitor and it only is DVI-D i.e. it doesn't have those 4 holes to allow so that adapter so wouldn't make a difference? Bit confused

Just because I am currently looking at both DVI-D and DVI-I adapters and DVI-I are a good amount cheaper.

cheers

check with your graphic card and monitor.

DVI-D (digital only, single link or dual link)
DVI-I (integrated, combines digital and analog in the same connector; digital may be single or dual link)

not everything can use DVI-I so check to make sure you buy the right thing.
