First Small GPU Modification.

Good Day everyone. I trust you are doing well.

Thought I would share a small modification that we did yesterday. Now I build custom air coolers. Would love to try my luck at GPUs but I just do not have the time at the moment.
I have a Sapphire RX470 Platinum Edition 4GB. Now it has a blower-style cooler. It would run 83C in gaming.

My friend gave me an R290x(I think, but I can't remember). The 290x does not work so I had a look at the cooler and saw it has the same Screw layout as the original cooler. So, I took the 290x apart.
The bottom layout was a lot different. So I cut out some of the bottom plate. The GPU had a bigger connection on the bottom plate. So this is the end product. Temp from 83C down to 65C. Happy with the end project.
I can maybe get it a little lower as I didn't replace paste. Waiting for my Thermal Grizzly to be delivered.

There is one thing I still need to try and fix. The fans are not balanced. This may be caused by the thermal pads. I think the thermal pads are too thick which causes it to be unbalanced. It rattles when The fan goes higher temp over 60C. I am going to see when I do a custom fan curve if this alleviates this problem a little.

PS: Don't diss me for where I put the GPU, had no time to get something properly as I am busy

I hope you kept the old cooler because that thing looks way better than the 290 cooler.

Have e real good look at the pinched power cables near the fans.
Usually one isn´t fitted properly and touches the fans at high rpm.

Would be an easy fix.

That's because a blade on one of the fans is broken off. The only fix for that is a new fan. ;)

Good Day. I trust you all are doing well.

Sorry for the late response as I am hectic busy. I did sort out the rattling fan with a custom fan curve (forgot how bad AMD standard fan settings are :p) and it just pushed the temp to 68c over the 65c. This is a huge decrease from 83c. The RX470 would disable itself when going to 80+ c. Now my next project will be to build a custom water block for this GPU as there is none for this GPU. I am not doing this to OC or anything. It is just for study purposes.

So when you are missing a impeller (blade or wing for most) you think that the imbalance could be fixed by changing a thermal pad? That is not going to happen, change the fan. But you are right the numbers are good.
