[SOLVED] GTX580 with 85° in idle
Hello everyone,
I have a secondary PC at work which I use for gaming during work breaks or testing new software since my company PC is locked down hard. Specs are on here. It has a reference design GTX580 from Zotac which I got out of a PC that had a leaking liquid cooler. Ventilation is good and I clean it every 2-3 months.
So far it has held up well, but when I wanted to game a bit in my lunch break today the fan spun up to what seemed to be 100%, and just as I wanted to shut down the game it switched itself off. Okay, I thought, another dead card. I then disassembled the card, cooled it down with cooling spray, cleaned everything, applied new TIM and put it back in.
Well, no artifacts and it still works. However, same problem as before, as in 85° when it sits idle on the desktop, and gaming will probably kill it. As far as I could tell there is a cap on the actual GPU. Maybe the TIM below the cap has come off the die?
Any way to fix it? It wouldn't be a huge loss or anything because free stuff is free, but a GTX580 is still somewhat powerful and my only free replacement would be an old GTX460.
See the attached screenshot for temps and fan speeds. I was toying with it a little, but bottom line is 85° in idle with ~60% fan speed.
