Hey guys, I am trying to repair a burn on my TV circuit board. It is a 10 year old projection tv that was working find until just a few days ago. I took it apart and found this piece flamed up and corroded itself. I know I have to re-solder it but what would be the best way to go about it?

you should take that to an electronics store. to get the correct resistor(?). that one is shot re soldering that one is a bad idea.

If the PCB is badly burnt, you have to clean out the burnt part. And the part looks like it could be a capacitor.. Can you see any part number on it?

Yes, the board is not too badly burnt. Luckily I caught it before it got too bad. I believe the part number is C551. I was unable to find a service manual for this TV with specific specs on this.

Yeah, that's definately a cap. and it sounds like you're on the right track to finding its part number. The bigger issue might be was it only the cap that was bad or was it something else that caused the cap to blow. Or... has the blown cap cause some damage further down the line.

It's a capacitor. The value of it may be printed on it if not to badly burnt. Try wiping it off to see if you can see the value.

Best to take it to an authorized service centre for that make of tv. They would have an official service manual, and could figure out what the part is. Service manuals typically can only be acquired by accredited service centres, and are pricey.

Found it listed here:
C551 | CAPACITOR: CERAMIC 0.0047UF 50V Z YF | BCKG814720Z

Could find something on the part number on the board as well (if there is a name on it that is).

This is why people come to TPU. So they don't have to pay "authorized service people".
Frick will send you his "unauthorized service bill". :D

you might want to replace the semi conductor[IN pic} might be the cause of the cap blow out

Just got back from the bad neighborhoods of the interwebz.
Looks like there are substitute parts from Hitachi and others for that capacitor, but I just have too little information to pin down the exact one.
Found schematics in Russia but I can't read it. :/
Found offer to e-mail schematic for a charitable "donation" from someone who lives in a dictatorial regime run country ... passed on that one.

Nothing stamped on the capacitor that you can read?

just found that one:banghead:

you could try your local tech colledge,
as i remember they used to have service manuals for many tv's videos and whatnot in the library of mine, when i was younger (reminisces about the past )

Too bad that information is completely irrelevant for this discussion since the page it is from is about a CB radio, not a TV.

That "C551" silk screen designation is not something that refers to a specific part in general. It's just a running number for a capacitor on that circuit board in that TV model. Any device out there might have a cap designated as C551 and most likely every of those would be different type of a cap.
