Help - MSI GTX 1080TI Duke

So here's my story. I bought a used 1080ti Duke (won't happen again). Not sure of its history but it'd be safe to assume it's been abused (mined). The card works, but when the card is under heavy load, it will automatically overclock over 2.2ghz and crash. Temps seem stable, have never seen anything over 70C. I don't have much experience with gpu's or gaming computers in general so bear with me. I used MSI AB to limit the power to 50% and that seems to make the card stable enough to use with a clock of around 1950 max MOST of the time. Clock settings are still stock other than the power. It seems to be happening more that my card will crash even at my 50% "fix". Not sure if maybe someone flashed bios on it at some point or if there's a physical issue with the card and I'd do better to just upgrade to a 2080 ;)

Thanks in advance for you help.

I will get a log of GPU-Z after playing some games tonight with these settings.

Post a screenshot of GPU-Z so we can see the clocks on its bios.

just find the default bios nad flash it back

This is a screenshot of GPU-Z and MSI AB directly after my game crashed. It's not at the 2200 it usually crashes at but it's way over the 1645 max boost clock that is should be set at. I'm unsure how to flash bios on a GPU. Scared I'm going to brick it. I will try tomorrow and see what happens.

@eidairaman1 is the vbios master, he'll probably give the easy instructions.

Would appreciate it. I downloaded nvflash, backed up my current bios and I'm going to make a bootable drive tomorrow and try it out, so any pointers before then would be awesome. :respect:

i would start with providing a picture of the white sticker on the back of your GPU to be specific so we know for sure exactly which bios we are looking for. Thank you for the GPUZ screenshot. Eidairaman is the go to for bios flashing but we will try our best to help you as well if he is not available.

It can be done in Windows with command prompt (must be launched as an admin). Just flashed my 980 Ti with a bios which has a higher power limit. :D

I think this is the sticker you’re talking about, it’s the only sticker I see on the GPU without removing it.

Yeah, looks like the GPU Bios mentioned above is what it is.

Since you got the current bios backed up, go ahead and get this one submitted on the GPU vbios database.

Watch this video to help you with flashing:

Does that Duke have a Dual BIOS feature?

I don’t believe it does, I haven’t seen anything online about it. If it did, how could I tell?

I didn't find a dual bios switch. So I followed the video and flashed my bios and then ran ddu. Preliminary tests seem positive. I can run at 100% power now without crashing (I only played for about 20 minutes, will update if I crash) Still goes over the 1645 boost listed in GPU-Z. Is that normal?

Perfectly normal. I'd say that the 1645 is rather the minimum which it will boost. :)
