Is my motherboard or my cpu ?

Hi guys i need some advice as am not sure if i t is my motherboard or my cpu that has died on me motherboard is MSI X870 GAMING PLUS WIFI and cpu AMD 9700X .I recently noticed a problem with my system where everything was showing up as bare bones when i know i set the bios to allow my cpu to run as fast as possible with the memory which was Crucial Pro DDR5 RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 6000MHz CL36 .Everything was fine until last saturday when my system would not boot at all, i am stumped and had to use my old pc to get online for this .when it is powered up the lights on the motherboard show that the cpu is to blame as it glows red have taken everything apart and there is no sign of any damage on the cpu or the motherboard,. any ideas gratefully welcomed

How did you set BIOS to allow your CPU to run as fast as possible? What have you changed in BIOS? Bumped up voltage and frequency multiplier?

Try to reset BIOS. What was last thing you changed in your PC and when? What DIMM slots are you using for RAM?

What PSU are you using? Looks like your RIG specs are not updated yet.

i set everything up as normal then changed the settings to allow my cpu to run at full speed set memory to xmp or the equivalent and it worked fine for 3 months then all of a sudden it would not boot and when i checked the motherboard when booting i noticed that the light for the cpu was showing red which to me means a cpu fault ram was in slots 2 and 4 and i know i have to change my system specs but will do so as soon as i get the system to work again

What does "to allow my cpu to run at full speed" mean? I've never seen such option in BIOS.
Do you mean TDP limit unlocking TDP from 65W to 105W? Or some sort of board maker auto OC tool?

Have you updated BIOS recently? Did you try clearing CMOS battery to reset BIOS to defaults?

If you really hadn't touched anything, hadn't updated anything and it had been working good for 3 months and THEN
suddenly it started to fail to POST, I'd advise testing board with another CPU. If it does not help, then another mobo.

Back in the days when Ryzen 7000 series were released, there have been issues with processors burning out.
This was caused by wrong implementation of EXPO profile, board makers thought of EXPO auto OC differently than AMD
and enabling EXPO caused board to raise some voltages as well, among these SoC voltage, which eventually caused dead CPU.
This should be a thing of past with X870 board.

Still, my advice - never use EXPO/XMP things or any sort of auto OC profiles, as you really don't know what exactly it changes.
Apply OC manually in BIOS in particular settings (RAM timings, RAM voltage, frequency, ...).

sorry i had forgotten what it was called so yes it was the TDP unlocking i was on about the only problem i have is that was the first new motherboard i had since my old b550 motherboard

Maybe your psu is going bad, try it with the minimum components installed, like 1 ram stick/drive etc.

hi guys my new pc is is totally dead the psu was a brand new one only been turned on for 2 weeks when my pc died am waiting to get a new cpu as i am unemployed and have little sparre cash at present

You'd need another CPU to test the mobo. Can you purchase some used Ryzen 7600 for like $100? Or borrow it one from somewhere. Any AM5 CPU would do.

I blame CPU or PSU for your problems. Faulty mobo would not work straight from the box or after BIOS update.

Theoretically, chipset cooler might not be seated on chipset correctly. I've recently purchased ASUS B650E-F Gaming for my Ryzen 9800X3D. During first start when I was in BIOS, I noticed chipset temp went quickly to 51°C literally in a minute. In damn BIOS. I touched the chipset heatsink and it was barely warm. On the internet I've found multiple similar cases, some users reporting chipset temp going beyond 75°C when not in idle. It's not critical temp, but still not good. After replacing TIM between chipset cooler and chipset, temps won't go past 40°C in BIOS and are always below 60°C while gaming. The point is, maybe your mobo suffers from similar issue as well and this eventually led to chipset burning out. Chipset won't work without CPU, thus board might be indicating CPU problem. On the other hand, there should be a safeguard in place even for chipset to shut down the system when it gets too hot. Still, you can remove chipset heatsink and take a look whether there's proper contact. Some boards have thermal pads, some have thermal paste. If you remove the heatsink and there is a paste, be sure to replace paste with new one.

It can still be DOA. A component being new and unused doesn't mean that it can't be defective.

well the power supply worked flawlessly until i had problems with my system thursday have checked it out on my back up system and there is no problem at all with it

Take the cpu and mobo to your local pc shop to test. I doubt its the psu. Or reseat all the components again with only one stick of ram all settings reset to default.
