Help with OS Transfer on a new build

Need some help figuring out what I need to do for a fresh build tomorrow. I will be moving off of my old CPU and mobo to a new X99 system. Right now I have my OS on a Sata SSD and want to transfer it onto a new NVME drive.

Some issues:

I have a windows 10 upgrade from a RETAIL windows 7 license so I should have migration rights correct?
I have 3 other non-OS drives so after I do the install with my old/ current Microsoft account will my fresh install of windows recognise those drives?

If you guys could shed some light on how to do this or advice please lend a hand. thanks!

Do a fresh install Widows 10 with the Windows 7 license. Good to go.

After the install then hook up your data drives. You may have issues with some programs if they are install to the secondary drives. Just reinstall them

If the license does not transfer just call MS

Thanks! I grabbed my license key but had heard some mixed stories of if the free upgrade would let you take your OS to a "New PC" even then I was not sure what would constitute a new pc over a hardware upgrade. I have my MCP and Microsoft still manages to confuse the hell out of me sometimes.

What you should do is create a Microsoft account and link it to your Windows 10 installation.

It'll be easier to track and re-use the Windows 10 license, and even if you have it tied to your account you don't have to use the MS Account as a Windows Account, you just tie it to your install through your local account. Pretty easy to do and will help you keep track of your W10 activations.

Click Start > Gear (Setting) > Activation > Add an account.... then login with your MS account.

Depending on the license you have though, if it's OEM, well you might try to be sneaky as they're limited to one hardware install for the life of the hardware...that I won't discuss here.

I believe with 1607 they may have stopped accepting Windows 7 keys for install, so unless you have a 1502 ISO and install it without a network connection, that old method won't work anymore. The last time I tried it failed. But upgrading still worked as of 2 weeks ago using the assisted services options, and it was legitimate because my son is disabled and needs visual and audible assistance at times.

My license is retail (non oem) so I should have migration. it is also tied to a Microsoft account as well not local.

You should be able to get 10 installed then, if for some reason you need a key to install 10 Pro, which you likely will...simply use a Microsoft KMS key which will get you past installing the OS then use your MS account to activate on the new hardware and retire activation on the old hardware.

Appreciate all the help. Its been a while since I've had to migrate an OS over to a new machine so I'm glad Microsoft made it a little "easier" now. Thanks for all the links I did check and my Microsoft account is tied to my login so hopefully I shouldn't run into any issues.

If you do just call them. They have said they will honor the retail license on an upgrade to 10

I'd also recommend a fresh install

You'll have to enter the key once the new operating system is completely installed you can't do it in the beginning of the process when it asks you because the key was still technically be bound to your original OS. Other than that you're fine

I too, need visual assistance since I cannot see paying for Win 10.

Info needed: What version of Windows you have (OEM, Retail, Pro, Home) Did it come with a PC you bought or did you buy the retail version of Windows (comes with both 32 bit and 64 bit)

Most likely if you want W 10 your going to have to pay for it

I don't think Windows 10 can provide the sort of help you need.
