Help with setting up i7-8550U on HP Zbook 14u G5

Hi!
I currently own a HP Zbook 14u G5 (like HP 840) with i7-8550U and AMD Radeon Pro WX3100 discrete video under win10.
I am new in using ThrottleStop and I would like some help with setting up the program. I've read many forums to get to these settings, but I think these setting are far for optimal. I also don't understand why does my CPU heats up till 90degree in about 10 seconds, switches to lower power PL1 and only then the fan kicks to a highter speed (I've changed the thermal interface to ShinEtsu and tested the cooling system). Usually, under constant load CPU is about 80 degree hot. I was thinking about lowering the voltage but unfortunately it's locked in BIOS.

Usually it passes in about 27sec but the video recording slowed down a little.

Your video shows that your CPU is power limit throttling at 20W because in the TPL window you have Long Power PL1 set to 20W. If you want your CPU to run faster, try increasing the PL1 power limit up to 30W or 35W or maybe your cooler can handle 40W. Run another test at these higher power settings.

It kind of sucks that CPU voltage control and all of the important stuff in the FIVR window is locked out. Not much you can do about that. At least your computer has much better than average cooling.

Edit - In the TPL window, I would set Power Limit 4 to a value of 0. This tells the CPU to ignore this limit.

I would leave Speed Shift Max at 40. If you need to lower the maximum CPU temperature, you can reduce the PL2 power limit a little.

Thank for your advices. I really don't like cooling system on this machine. I've tried setting pl1/2 to 25/40 but i get constant temperature around 89 degree, with 30/40 -98degree. I think it's a bit too much? Question is why temperature jumps so fast from say 60 to 90 degree? seems like it has some kind of multiplier of load.

The U series CPUs have a 15W TDP rating. Most manufacturers use heatsinks and fans that can handle 15W of heat without any problems. When you try to force these CPUs to run at 30W or 40W, the core temperatures will instantly shoot up with any significant load. These are powerful little CPUs if you have unlocked power limits and great cooling to take advantage of that extra power.

I think it's a bit too much?
Intel sets the default thermal throttling temperature to 100°C and HP has lowered that a couple of degrees down to 98°C. If these temperatures were not safe for long term use, Intel and HP would have lowered the throttling temperature. You can run your CPU at whatever max temperature you are comfortable with.

Thanks for your answers. Now I like what I get out of this profile. I'll try to search for some better termal paste, maybe then I could rise pl1 power. I wonder how could I return everything to stock settings when on battery? because it drains it like hell ...
