Hello, I hope someone can help me. My motherboard is a Asus p6x58d Premium says it has 3 PCIE slots 2 of which can be configured as x16. I am only using 1 card in the 3 slots however my video card is running x8 not x16 according to GPU-Z.
vid card no stress.PNG
After a stress test it jumps to
vid card stress.PNG
. It was originally in slot 1then I tried moving it to slot 2. Initially in the Bios I had to to change it to x16 x1 for slots 2 and 3. I did that but still no change. Running out of things to try. Am I missing something here or is this running x16? Sorry for the newbie question. just trying to figure out what is going on. Any help is greatly appreciated. Bios and Drivers are up the the latest.

card is so slow its not capable of putting enough load on the buss to get it to spin up to 16x

you can probably disable some of the pcie power management stuff in the bios but you aren't gonna see any improvement a GT730 was pretty awful when it was not its positively useless these days

Thanks for the reply. So if I am playing a game say 7 days to die would it then spin up to x16?

According to the min spec you won't be able to run it anyway. Your video card is so slow that it won't matter what the bus speed is.

Here are the 7 Days to Die System Requirements (Minimum)

  • CPU: 2.4 GHz Dual Core CPU
  • CPU SPEED: Info
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • OS: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
  • VIDEO CARD: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon HD 4770
  • PIXEL SHADER: 3.0
  • VERTEX SHADER: 3.0
  • SOUND CARD: Yes
  • FREE DISK SPACE: 1 GB
  • DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 256 MB

Sorry if I am not understanding. I have run 7days to die but it on the lowest setting. So if I have the video card overclocked comparable to the 8800 would that help or is the video card bottlenecking because of the memory interface or the memory bandwidth or is it only running at x8? Just trying to understand what I need to do to make that game and others run smoother. Thank you for your time.

it doesn't even run correctly on the recommended specs

The card is only wired for x8, you could run it at x4 and not see a difference. Also a 730 is more powerful than a 8800GT guys, not by a lot but it is.

You need a better card, plain and simple.

Sure it will work. I've been running video cards with newer pci-e revisions than what my slots are for years. I'm running GTX1070s, which are 3.0 cards, in my 2.0 slots right now no problem.

You might want to fill out the rest of your system specs, though.

Thanks, updated my specs. After the vid card update need to concentrate on ram in my opinion.

6GB is okay, but just barely okay. You can squeak by on 8, but typically 16 is recommended these days. If you could find a 12gb triple channel kit though, I think you would be in real good shape. Also, those 1366 i7 chips were monster overclockers... and for the price of a pizza you can get a 6 core 32nm Xeon that will easily hit 4GHz or more.

If you want to know more, I suggest you pay a visit to the Xeon Owner's Club.
