Hey guys,

So FFXIII is coming in my mail next week and I've been trying to find a way to make the PS3 audio come out of my speakers and HD video through my monitor.

So far I've found 2 methods to work..

Video:
So I disconnect my current DVI connection to from my PC and replace it with this and a HDMI connector.

Audio:
For audio I set the audio output on the PS3 to the standard red white outputs .. then I connect it with this thing through the line in slot..

These are very viable I think but my real question is... how would it output through my 5.1 speakers? And will the sound be HD? Are there any other more convenient ways of doing this :D?

This is how i done my 360, all thats really diffrent is that i used a VGA/DVI cable and not a HD one Heres my post.

The only problem is, if you run the sound through the Pc and out, it has to be on all the time to play the PS3/360 :)

how do you have the ps3 connected to your 5.1 now?

Why dont you just leave it like it is for sound and just route the video signal to your Pc monitor?

I bought an HDMI to DVI cable from newegg for like under $10.

Bought it for an XBOX360.. but the 360 hdmi plug if used blocks the standard componet audio cables from being used.. which sucked.

Does the ps3 have optical out and surely your 5.1 setup does too right?

My speakers only have the green black and pinkish connectors.. the PS3 definitely has an optical out, but I don't have any idea how it works. I'm currently using onboard since my sound card is having issues atm.

@Meow9000 Its all good, I rarely ever turn my comp off anyways

so wait your basically plugging in your HDMI port of your PS3 into your monitor right? and then use the standard RCA cable to get audio?

In a state of flux...
Pretty decent guide, I'm sure it'll help someone who wants to use their monitor for the PS3/Haxbox if they don't have an HDMI input on their screen. :)

I would however try to maintain sound quality and use something with a little more 'humph' than speakers that are maybe built into the monitor and try to avoid the RCA to 3.5mm converter as they usually don't sound the best.

I use RCA to hook into the TV surround from the PS3 (I also have the HTPC on the same TV) but you could also use RCA to connect to either a decent pair of PC-styled speakers (5.1 maybe?) or a receiver; the genuine part.

:toast:

Edit: My monitor also has HDMI. :D

That's the idea yes,

@randomflip : just split the cable, use the RCA single adapter to get the red/white into one male then use another one to split the sound from your PC/PS3 into one input in the back of your sound system. Should theoretically work though you may get some noise/static.

your DVI-HDMI is backwards. it will not fit on your DVI input in your monitor. unless your monitors accept HDMI input, you will need to find an actual converter cable, not just an adapter.

if you look at the adapter, on one side is a flat connector, with 2 little connectors above and below it - this allows it to only plug into the video card, as the monitor side does not have those extra connectors. i don't know if you can fix that with some surgery or not - may be possible.

Yeah i was thinking that too, would that cable i linked work for my monitor is VGA and my Logitech Z4 2.1 speakers?

oh for sure - missed that :)

you will need an rca-stereo 3.6mm adapter, can be had at radioshack, walmart, etc for not too much. it will go in between your speaks and the end of that wire.

VGA is inherently noisier (ie interference, more static, more haze). it will do the job but you are turning a digital signal into analog, which will cause quality loss. I would probably just go with it, but if you can find a different DVI adapter (like this one) you will definitely have better quality. i don't know whether the PS3 would take advantage of it or not though, as even at 720p HD vga works fine...1080p it works, with issues.

keep in mind even if you get for example a VGA-DVI adapter, the cable is still VGA so you already transformed it. if you want it to stay digital it needs to be HDMI or DVI from the Ps3 out all the way to your monitors in.
