How much power does the 6900xt need ?

just got my hands on a powercolor 6900xt red devil but my psu is only 750w , which psu does it need for around £150 please ?

That said, some PSUs are better than others. Sadly you didn't bother to specify which one you currently own so people here can't really comment on that.

However if you consult the Powercolor corporate website for an authoritative answer -- rather than asking random Internet strangers on a Q&A forum -- you'll find this page:

which recommends 900W minimum for this card.

So it's basically your call based on which source you trust more. Naturally if you use a 750W PSU, you'll be running with a higher load percentage than on a 1000W PSU. Increased load relative to PSU capacity will mean more heat. More heat = higher fan speed = more noise.

Your PSU choice should also take into consideration other components in your chassis, specifically the CPU since that's usually the other power hungry component. If you choose to upgrade your PSU carefully consider future component upgrades (like increased CPU TDP). Personally I don't think it's worth stepping up from a 750W PSU to an 800W model. The more sensible upgrade would be to a 1000W model. I have no recommendations since I have never owned a 1000W PSU.

Actually he did. On system specs he mentioned :

Power Supply	EVGA 750W gold

Because you have gold series , that means that your PSU can deliver at his peak somewhere arround 87 to 90% from the power mentioned on it.
That means it will deliver arround 652 W on full load.
So i will recommend to buy a slightly better one.

no it can deliver 750 watts but pulls 750/.87= 862 watts from the wall.

My opinion: it appears to be a decent choice. Not sure if I would have chosen something else at this price point. I would have certainly looked at Seasonic ATX units though.

from my experience at least a higher end 1000W PSU if overclocked, 750W if not.
RDNA2 has insanely high transients (far beyond a 3090 into the 1000W Range)

PowerColor Vanilla 6900XT is 850W Recommended, Red Devil 6900XT is 900W Recommended.

A High Quality PSU from Seasonic, SuperFlower will handle it, just remember the useage of all other components needs to be accounted for, a psu calculator will give you a general base line.

Do not skimp on the PSU.

Fyi you can go to card makers and find psu watts...

Just my 2ct, i run an 6900xt (XTXH) with no powerlimit (Morepowertools) and an 5900x with PBO and AutoOC, all on Water and my 750W Seasonic Prime TX has not once had a problem delivering the power needed which is around 650W Peak under full load for both CPU+GPU.
but a little remark: this PSU can handle up to 900W before shutting down.

concluding, i think your EVGA 750W PSU should be able to handle your system as well. But no guarantees!

@chaotic_uk I'd say don't worry about it so much so with a bit of tweaking like undervolting and a tad reduced power limit would be best , at least it is for me. I've upgraded from a 5700XT , don't know what for because I didn't feel the need for extra performance per say while still at 1080p , but now with the 6900XT heavily underrun , it matches or outpaces the previous card , enjoying.

According to igorslab's review it can spike up to 450-500 watts, but the average is around 300.

Just to be clear, the figures in the review refer to the graphics card alone. And as said above, the PSU has to be built/designed to withstand these spikes, so a higher wattage is more likely to cope if it has greater headroom / components with more capacity and higher trips.

Your approaching the problem wrong. If you're spending enough to get a 6900 XT, you shouldn't skimp on the hardware that could kill the card if you push it too hard. Do yourself a favor and put just as much TLC into your PSU choice as your GPU choice. If I was getting a 6900 XT, I would be buying a 1kW PSU that's 80+ Gold or better. In fact, my Vega 64 and 3930k use a 1kW 80+ Platinum and after a decade, the PSU is still running strong even when I push the machine to its limits.

Check my ninja edit. I personally would use a 1kW with the 6900 XT just as I do for my Vega 64 and 3930k which can easily pull 700w off the wall and I've seen as much as 850w, granted most of that is the 3930k which is power hungry SOB.

If you asked me 10-15 years ago, I would have said get a beefier PSU.

Today, just try the card with your current PSU, run some benchmarks. If it's stable, you're good. if you experience instability or shutdowns, the GPU needs more juice. It's that simple.
