MIT researchers have made the process much easier with a new kind of 3D hologram that is printed by an inkjet printer.

Using an image-processing algorithm, Lumii's technology prints a scanned image into layers on transparent sheets, which are then stacked to create a 3D effect.

'The Lumii Light Field Engine accepts 3D models and computes a set of unique patterns,' shares Lumii on the firm's website.

'By printing these patterns and stacking them in front of a backlight, they emit a multi-view light field.'

Lumii's process uses a custom made image-processing algorithm that the team developed while still attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, reports Gizmodo.

The software is designed to break down a 3D model into multiple layers that can be individually printed - using a standard inkjet printer.
