Morning all. I recently purchased an HP Z840 work station 2 socket e5 2620 v3 12 core. 1125 power supply. I want upgrade processors to e5 2680 v4 14 core. that would increase watts from 85 to 120. Can I use the standard coolers and that may increase overall fan and blower speed. or should purchase HP N3R5AA coolers at extra cost. Thanks in advance Bob.

I say, wait and see. And if me, if I found I needed more cooling, I would look at adding additional, or upgrading the case fans to move more cool air through the case.

I don't think it'll make much of a difference. Both can handle 135W CPUs. The only difference is that Z Cooler has a vapor chamber and looks better, but either way you are going to be bound by how fast you can get that heat off the HS fins. I'd start with testing it as-is, and if it gets a bit hot - cranking up the fan profile.

Good luck!

It's a bit harder with HP Z workstations. They are already packed to the brim with shrouds and fans, and have finicky non-standard fan connectors. Plus, the CPU shroud already has a pair of 0.35A Nidec fans (I think it's 5 in total just for this piece), which are already a bit beefier than typical consumer PC fans (~12V 0.32A, pushing almost 50CFM each). Anything higher will turn it into a jet engine ))))

Thanks. That brings up another question, can i use 2 e5 2680 v4 processors together even if the batch numbers ( L648h888 ) do not match?

I'm running a couple of E5-2698 V4 on mine and it handles it just fine, fans can ramp up quite a bit...

if they are same CPU it should work....and I assume by batch number you are referring to the manufacturing date being the same like they got binned and "matched" together? doesn't matter if one was made on Day/Year ABC and the other was made on Day/Year XYZ.

now I have limited experience here, only got 1 dual socket system. I do recall chatting with other forum users about stepping needs to be the same. My experience is with a Mac Pro dual socket and I recall the stepping name (or whatever it is technically called) being etched on the CPU IHS. Those were Xeons, I think your E series chips are too? quick google search got me a pic on ebay. the bit I circle there is the stepping, that HAS to match. don't worry about those longer strings of letters and digits under there. I think that is the "batch number" you're referring to and is likely traceability for knowing where, when, and who manufactured it. edit: 1 is the batch, and 1 is the serial number I would assume

Thanks Skizzo I to coming from a Mac Pro 2009 I restored dual socket the numbers that match are processor model and speed, the others do not. Unit works well.
