I bought an MSI RX580 2048SP, can anyone tell me if it's legit or fake? (I'm planning a Monterey Open Core build)

Hello everyone this is my first post here, i'm new to the site.

I'm planning to upgrade my Sierra Clover (HP Z800 Sysem) build to a Monterey OC build and so I bought a used MSI RX580 2048SP GPU a few days ago and it looks legit.
It has MSI branding on the fans, and I did a GPUZ check and it looks legit and links to this. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/msi-rx-580-2048sp-armor-8-gb.b6699

One issue I have, is on my current Hackintosh build (Sierra - Clover) my OSX boots but it shows the GPU un-named and showing 5mb video memory?
IMG_4925.jpg

Could this mean the GPU is not MSI (I thought it would be plug and play OSX compatible)?
If anyone can help me i'd be really grateful. Should i return the card or keep it, or do i need to reflash it?
I bought the card assuming that MSI was a good brand for Apple Compatibility and I wasn't expecting any problems.
(The issue may lie in my old SIerra Clover build, but I just wanted to get some feedback from the community here).
Thanks in advance to anyone here who can help me.

Here is some screenshots below:

GPU memory information

It looks fine on my dual boot Windows 10 however.
And here it is listed in Windows Device Manager:

Any help at all would be really appreciated,
Thanks everyone.

To my knowledge RX580 2048SP are not supported by MacOS at all. It should be a full fledge RX580 or RX570 with the right bios for MacOS.

Thanks, yes I thought the MSI brand was in fact a full fledge RX 580 and it was supported by MacOS whis is why I bought it, and I was confused when reading in GPUZ that this was in fact a 2048SP model. Strange how ithas MSI branding in it.

How would I start finding a suitable bios for this to make it a compatible 570?

I’m a bit it a newbie regarding this, but am well experienced with flashing roms over the years for other devices.

What first steps should I take to try and make this card MacOS compatible.
Thanks.

Doesn't look like a fake card to me. Your best bet is trying the BIOS for that exact model that is branded RX 570, might work out of the box without any other problems

The only difference I noted is that this BIOS is for Samsung K4G80325FB while yours is K4G80325FC - data I found on Reddit says it's about the same with your newer revision clocking a bit higher so it will probably work. As always make a backup before you flash anything, and have another GPU/integrated graphics enabled to reflash if necessary.

Thats really helpful advice. Yeah i have an old GTX 670 GPU to use as a backup as my HP Z800 doesn’t have integrated graphics.

i’ll back up my GPU Bios first, and will give it a try.

I’m still a bit unsure on which 570 bios to choose from. I looked on here and there were lots of card manufacturers, how would I chose one.

Just test and if doesn’t work, try another one?

Thank you for the help.

Sorry i misread your earlier message. I’ll do what you said, choose a 570 closest to my model of card. Hopefully that will work.
Thanks again

Yes, that would be the BIOS I linked. Armor OC with Samsung memory. The memory is a little different (earlier revision), but generally I don't see why it shouldn't work with yours. Good luck

Brilliant thanks so much, i’ll back up my bios and will give it a try, and will report back here later today or tomorrow.

Ok thanks. Should I find a different bios instead. I’m a bit new to all of this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for the advice.
Luckily I can return the card to eBay no problem, i guess I should have got an RX570 or a RX580 (not 2048SP).

I was just hoping there may have been another solutionin flashing it to a RX 570.

Thank so much for the helpful advice.

I will give you a clue about device id for the gpu

1002 67DF is what you need, not 1002 6FDF

Thanks for the advice.

I returned the GPU card today and will look for another card in the coming week when I get the refund. I have quick question though please.
If i find a potential card, can I ask the seller to provide the vendor and device ID prior to me purchasing it?
The vendor id is the brand of card yes? But can the device ID be calculated via the serial number, or should I just ask for the specific GPU model?
Any help would be appreciated.

They will likely not know what that means, you could look for listings that have a GPU-Z screenshot in them, or request one to the seller. But if your objective is to use it with a Mac, there's plenty of models that should work for your purpose, check this guide out

Based on what I read here your best bet is to buy an RX 6600 XT to get the most complete support for new versions of MacOS. Either that or 5700 XT, Radeon VII, or RX Vega 64, but these will prove pricy. The VII is probably the best one of the bunch, but also easily the most expensive and hard to find.

This page also has recommendations on specific models to buy, these will probably work out of the box for you with no hassle:

Thanks for your message.
Those RX6680 cards are out of my budget at the moment, I was hoping to go for the RX 570 or RX580.

I just wondered how i can be sure i’m buying the correct card in advance?

i guess I could ask the seller to send a GPUZ screenshot, probably the easiest option. But would the full model number be sufficient?

Thanks.

Normally yes, as long as you stick to official, licensed models. The second link I sent has several specific models that should work. Is performance too important or do you primarily want a GPU that will drive the macOS desktop, play videos and whatnot? Look for the Pro WX 4100, WX 5100 and W5500 models, you may be able to get a deal on them used. Or grab an MSI Armor, ASUS Strix or Sapphire Pulse RX 580

Yeah I just need a GPU to run basic desktop etc. I work with audio mainly on my mac. I have a dual boot system currently and can boot to my windows system for more graphic focused work.

Thanks so much for your help. I missed the 2nd link you posted so will have a look at the now.

Thank you again.

Yeah you can have them provide a gpu-z screenshot and a model number sticker to compare gpu stats on here

Thanks, yes I thought the MSI brand was in fact a full fledge RX 580
The 2048SP is a different card to the plain RX580, and thus needs different drivers
On windows it's supported, on Mac it is not because apple never sold a product with the 2048SP card

The difference in specs may seem small, but a ~10% difference in available shaders/ROPS/TMUs makes it more like an RX 575 - it's quite a bit slower

Basically, just check the name of what you're buying - it's like a 3090 vs a 3090Ti, that Ti changes a lot.
