I need a PSU for one HDD and one ODD

So, I have an Antec 650w PSU that does not have any molex or SATA power connectors (long story).

I need to get a small PSU that will power just that.

I got some ideas:

Would the items below work for 1 HDD, 1 ODD and 1 LED?

The 130w should do. Id personally get the 200w since its $12 though. Gives you more breathing room as well.

A HDD and an optical (is that what ODD is?)? That, even on spinup, wont use more than 30W. After spinup, Like 10-15 at most...

Well, I tried one of these guys out:

It exploded after 5 minutes.

So, I'm thinking I need something stronger.. but I don't know what.

Those PSUs seem tohave a 24-pin connector, which I don't need. Would it work without connecting the 24-pin? All I need is a molex.

The 24pin is what would generate the power to the other peripherals. I honestly dont know how a secondary power supply would work as I have never used one before; seeing that it uses a 24 pin power connector and the main PSU uses the same, i dont know where you would plug it in.

The adapter didn't work because it was low on 5v rail.
A secondary power supply would work but you'd have to manually switch it on and off, and short two wires.

The best solution according to me would be to get some wire and create your own sata and molex adapters. Just get the shoe from an old PSU, and power it from the 24 pin connector.

You can easily create one.

And then use wires from Molex connector to create a SATA connector.

or get a molex to sata adapter.

It's pretty easy, there are just 3 wires you need to split, i believe. the 12v one, 5v and ground. if i remember correctly.. yellow is 12v and black is ground and red is 5v, but u need to double check.

You can easily google for the pin layout of molex and sata power connectors

Or get a little bit better PSU for around $50 should be able to get an 700w for that price

I would, but it has to be tiny. I have about as much space left in the case as a 2-3 slot cooler.

This is what a 24 pin connector looks like

Just attach a wire to any +5v DC rail, and another to any +12v DC rail, and one to the Ground rail and then use the diagram I posted earlier to create your Molex and Sata connectors.

12v rail would be yellow in color, Ground should be black and 5v rail would be red in color. Now it should be easy

You should just be able to buy some crimps and some heatshrink. it's what i did when i cut up some of my power connectors, i had no idea what i was doing either. Just follow the colour coding of the wires and the molex diagram.

i.e. cut a black cable and strip it a little then reconnect it including another wire with a crimp. add a little solder if you want a stronger connection and put some heat shrink around it (put the shrink on the wire before you connect the joint)

You only need to split 3 wires, then you can just hook up a couple of molex splitters for the rest.. Not the most elegant solution but it should work without needing to add a second psu to your case.

You could do an inline wire splice.

If you add a second psu, you will have to permenantly short two of the wires and use the switch at the back to turn it on.. either that, or split some of the wires on both psus and connect them together.

edit 2 - I recently sleeved some cables on my old power supply, i'm not sure if i soldered all the joints or not. anyway, the 12v rail up dying a couple of months later. i'm not sure if it was the low rating (450w) the age (2+ years) or the fact that i had cut and reconnected some of the wires. So yea, you definitely need some expert advice if you do decide to split a connector.

I just don't think I can do this without pictures, no matter how much I read about it.

Getting the second PSU seems more safe. If I lose the main PSU, I'm toast.
