Hello guys, i need to build a pc for a friend with very limited budget, i am wondering whats the difference between i3 10100 and 10105? is the 10105 just a slightly better version or is there any downside?

Also i was thinking on buying one of these motherboards:

- Gigabyte h410m S2H v3
- Gigabyte h410m H v3
- Asus h410m e-prime
- Asus h510m e-prime
- MSI h510m A-PRO

As i said we have a very limited budget so i dont expect to buy a really good motherboard, but at least i would like to know if i should avoid one of those i mentioned.

We are buying 2x4GB 2666hz

i hope you guys can help me ! thanks!

The 10105 is 100MHz faster in both base and boost clock. If the prices are the same, choose the 10105, if the 10100 is substantially cheaper then there's probably not any real-life performance lost by saving some money.

My thoughts on the boards is either of the H510 models. Both are about the same, and the H510 will support the 11th gen CPUs if there's ever an upgrade planned in the future. Either should run a 10400 or 11400 without any problems. Neither will probably run anything with higher power requirements.

As for the memory, make sure that 3200 isn't less expensive. It will still run at 2666 on these boards but again, for possible future use.

What are they planning to use this for, and what are the price differences? The only real difference is 100MHz clock speed, which won't amount to much performance difference.

The motherboards, I'd go with either of the H510 boards.

Memory wise, I don't think I'd do 2x4GB. I'd instead to 1x8GB because the boards only have 2 slots and 8GB is not a lot of memory these days. Chances are, out of all the upgrades, adding another 8GB is probably going to be the first thing they want to do. Yes, with only 1x8GB you won't have dual-channel, but it really doesn't make a noticeable performance difference at this hardware level.

Nope, nope and nope. Just get the extra cash and get 2x8GB. 8GB (especially in single channel) is just too low these days.

I'd personally stay away from the giga boards, not heard good things about their QC for the last few years now, Asus tends to be more expensive for same specs as other brands so I would likely choose the MSI H510 board, and have had a good experience with MSI in recent years, get the cheaper CPU, 8GB (2x4GB, not single 8GB) whilst not ideal is fine for most things on budget PC's, stretch to 16GB if you can though I can make an assumption this won't be used for gaming or high end video/3d work etc

Wondering why, I've had a Gbyte board and graphics card for an year without any problems.

I know they've had problems (like exploding PSUs etc) but they're not total crap.

Some people really don't have the extra $40 to go from 8GB to 16GB on a very limited budget, my PC started off with completely different specs than what it has now as I bought the cheapest I could afford at the time and upgraded every bit of it over time, I started with 8GB and a 240GB SATA SSD, now I have 16GB b-dies and 1 1TB NVME drive, 2TB HDD, 1TB HDD and a couple of older drives I use to download on  :toast:

Not just their PSU's certain GPU's and motherboards have a lot of issues with QC, power delivery etc just would not be a brand I would choose at this moment in time, although I had good experiences with them in the past.

Well, practically I started this rig with a tight budget as well, Pentium G3258/Gigabyte H81/2x4GB DDR3/GTX 670 over 6½ years ago. I know the limitations of a budget build and I've practically got a part after part as well to get to this point where my rig is today. :D

If integrated graphics are going to be used, pay attention to video outputs when choosing the motherboard.

All boards listed have one VGA and one HDMI connector. The Asus H510M-E additionally has a DisplayPort, while the Gigabyte H410M S2H V3 has a DVI output.

You just unlocked a memory, running Omega modded ATI Catalyst drivers back in the day
I posted these also in the nostalgic hardware thread, used those back in the day with 9800 SE ;)

Too bad, because that old Radeon doesn't support any modern codecs and can't accelerate YT video playback, so CPU will be used instead. Knowing that 5770 is next to useless for modern gaming, it would be a good time to ditch it. At least integrated graphics can decode modern codecs and has modern drivers and will not die soon, which card of that age can at any moment.

Are there any specific motherboard features that you're looking for? There are quite a few models available for less money than the two Asus ones on your list. Here's what you can get in the UK for less than 70 pounds, for example:

ya know having an igpu comes in really handy sometimes, esp if you have to troubleshoot.

and it will run "southpark: the stick of truth" no problem! :)

thanks a lot for your advice guys

as i said we have a very limited budget, 16gb of ram is just not possible, so i think 2x4 is the way to go

I understand that budget isn't always flexible, but as someone who has used a lot of low-end systems, then even for basic desktop use I've found memory is a real quality of life thing. It is so painful, I'd honestly consider spending less on the board, or the CPU, by going used. In my country, Kingston and Crucial do 16GB kits for not a whole lot more than single DIMMs (a bit like 250GB vs 500GB SSDs).

RE: the boards, I don't know about the lower-end ones, but when Hardware unboxed has tested the Asus and MSI B560 and B660 equivalents, the MSI boards performed much better. That said, with an i3 I doubt temperatures will be an issue either way.

8GB (especially in single channel) is just too low these days.
The 8GB is a little low(but still enough for most office computers), but the single channel doesn't really make a noticeable difference. And if you're on a budget, the ugprade will likely be on a budget too, and adding a 2nd 8GB stick down the road will be cheaper than throwing out the 2x4GB and buying 16GB outright. And dual-channel makes so little difference that most OEMs are shipping their systems with single sticks of RAM now, even on gaming PCs.

hes keeping his old amd hd5770 and we are going for the 10105F version
That doesn't make much sense either. The HD5770 isn't really helping much, get the 10105 with an iGPU and just use the iGPU. At least the iGPU will hardware accelerate modern video playback.
