Improvement on CPU temperatures

Hi all,

I have been following multiple threads here and was very helpful in order to set up my throttlestop settings, however, I have still space for improvement.

I currently use a MSI laptop GL73 with Processor /intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz, 2208 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)

I undervolted the CPU and seems that performance is not bad from cinebench, however, reaches high temperatures which affect how smooth is gaming. At max gets to 97c, so quite hot.

Thermal paste was changed already couple of times and was sent to computer shop for a check already.

I know that laptops run hot usually, but maybe there are some changes I can make to improve temps?

Many thanks!

Intel gave the 8750H a 45W TDP rating. Most laptops that are running this processor have cooling systems designed around that spec. When you set PL1 and PL2 to double that amount, your CPU is going to be bouncing off the thermal throttling limit at times.

The log file shows that your cooler can handle 60W to 65W for maybe 8 seconds. It cannot handle 90W. During longer term testing, the CPU running at 35W cannot be properly cooled so it is constantly thermal throttling. I have no idea how good your cooling was when your computer was brand new. All I can see is that it is not nearly good enough now. Game play is not going to be smooth when a CPU is constantly bouncing off the thermal throttling limit.

What thermal paste did you use? Are you spreading it in a thin layer so it covers the CPU die? Is the heatsink tight to the CPU? Did the computer shop apply the paste last time? How long ago? It is not unusual for some thermal pastes to quickly degrade if you are constantly running the CPU at 97°C.

It is up to you to figure out some way to re-engineer the heatsink to improve cooling in your laptop. If the cooling was this bad when your laptop was new, I would have taken it back to the store the same day. The poor cooling is preventing you from running your 8750H at its 45W rated power level.

Hi unclewebb,

thanks for the prompt reply! The cooling systems seems the issue indeed.

The laptop is around 3.5 years old and had no problems for the first couple of years. I did change the thermal paste (Grizzly) myself, then I had two different shops doing it (cleaning and changing thermal paste + thermal pads) like couple of years ago. It is possible at this temperatures is not working anymore well (both paste and cpu)

I am not sure they did a great job tbh as after few days the problem repeated itself. So at this point I can either try to change it again or change laptop you are probably suggesting? Probably changing paste again would only postpone of few weeks its inevitable pension unfortunately I think

You cannot wait a couple of years to do maintenance, especially if you know the shop did a poor job. Clean out your laptop and paste it yourself. You care more about your laptop compared to any shop.

or change laptop you are probably suggesting?
Try fixing the problem you have rather than buy a new laptop that will likely have a new set of problems.

Of course you are right, I never wanted to put hands again as I accidentally made some mistakes the first time I opened it to repaste it.

So I will try to order new thermal paste and redo the work myself. Will make a new update soon then.

Thank you!
