If you're on Intel 3XX chipset and want to upgrade, do it quick before prices jump.

I already noticed MicroCenter bumped 10th gen prices slightly, possibly a side effect of this.

"Intel has announced the discontinuation of its 9th Gen Coffee Lake Refresh Desktop CPU lineup including the flagship Core i9-9900K. A total of 117 boxed and tray CPU units featured inside Intel's 9th Generation lineup will reach discontinued status this year while the last shipments will be made till December 2021. "

Microcenters i5 10400 for $150 is a gigantic steal (it's borderline 5600x 1440/4k gaming performance for half the cost).

If the soon to be released 11th gen has i5 models under 200 bucks then I wonder if the 10400 will reach even lower price (I remember the 2600 towards the end selling for as low as $80 with $100 being common)

Just got the 9900k from newegg for $320. Hoping that CPU lasts me a few years before I have to upgrade the cpu and motherboard again.

Went to microcenter to see if they had some deals. By far the biggest deal was an open box i7 9700k for only $158 bucks. I know it's a few years old but damn 8 cores with decent IPC and fast core clock for almost sub 150 bucks is a steal

If I lived next to an MC that would have been VERY tempting. Only reason I got the 9900k was for it's extra headroom for streaming.

Yeah, Zen 2/3 parts are getting scalped so hard that Intel has become a great value option, where the price of 3600 now almost pays for a 10400 + a basic Z490 mobo. Gaming wise 10400 is a 3600 equivalent even when stuck on DDR4 2666C14.

With 2666 RAM and a 2080 Ti, it actually beat the 3600 and 3600X on almost every test. Trades blows with a 3700X, but mostly wins there too.

Power unlock it and pair it with a Z490 and DDR4-3200 and it will beat every Zen 2. With the price delta between 3600 and 10400, if one is considering the 3600 as a gaming chip right now there's no reason not to get the 10400 + Z490. Based on what I've seen, it is actually cheaper to do that than get a 3600 + B550. If cost is a big factor, you can get a 10400 + H470 / B460 type setup and save about $70.

OK, now I'm genuinely curious, as I'm running a Z490 board and 3200 RAM. I thought the non K parts, like the 10400, were locked, and Z490 was only for K SKUs? I was actually considering the 10400, but thought it would useless on a Z490 board because it wasn't a K SKU...so I got the 10700K instead.

Using a non-K CPU on a Z490 allows you to use RAM over 2666 for i3 and i5, and over 2933 for i7 and i9. It also allows you to overclock BCLOCK up to about 102.9MHz (from 100) - this allows the CPU a little bit of overclock potential (100x40= 4000Mhz vs 102.9x40=4166MHz.) That also overclocks everything else on the motherboard though, so you can run into issues with RAM speed and other things.

Memory speed still depends on the memory controller in the CPU. Some have stated that the i5 doesn't do as well with higher speed RAM, but when I had my 10400 it ran 3733 without an issue.

^ Thanks for that explanation. Heh, it probably wouldn't make much sense to sell my 10700K and get the "lesser" 10400 though...right? :D

Probably not for the price difference. Although, I can't say that it was a huge improvement going from the 10400 to the 10850k. Maybe if I can get a better GPU (in like 2023 maybe? ;)) there might be more of a difference.

Lol no, my 10400 is a place holder for either a 10700K or something in RKL.

The big difference is the multiplier on non K parts cannot be changed. The max on 10400 is 43 so 43X100Mhz = 4.3Ghz normal max single core. Then there's the BCLK, so theoretical max single core is 43x102.9 = 4.424 Ghz.

The big thing power unlock does though is allow all core turbo to be higher and go forever without power limitations. Mine is set for all core 4.2ghz, where stock is like all core 3.9Ghz. This has a lot bigger difference with say a 10700 or 10900 vs their K variants than it does with a 10400. Still, getting +7% on clocks and +5% or so on memory is all you need to go from bottom of these charts to near the top :)

Yeah...I mean, I'm only running a 1660 Super so I doubt I'd notice any difference in performance between a 10400, 10600, or the like. Have to wait and see what RKL brings to the table.

Actually you might, and it's easy to see. With that AIO there's no reason not to tweak it IMO. You don't even need to make it permanent to just check it out :

That's Intel's XTU. You can go in there and increase Tau for starters - change the Turbo Boost Short Power Max from I think it's 56 seconds on K series chips to like 128s. That means your CPU will turbo up to max all core for longer. You can also increase turbo boost power max if it starts to exceed that.

Then use HW Monitor to view clocks and temps under a synthetic load. Most people would not even call this overclocking, it just allows the CPU to go to stock all core turbo and stay there longer.

The gains on 10700+ are huge. Without anything else, you could get over 10% on a K chip. And that AIO should be able to handle it.

I actually installed that XTU program when I set my rig up, but aside from taking a peek at it, I haven't actually used it much. I'm a bit...scared of fiddling around with it, honestly. Afraid of "breaking" something

You won't break anything. If you've already used Asus AI Tweaker it may have already done this to some degree. These don't increase how fast the CPU can go at peak, it just lets it stay there longer. I think the short power max causes a K chip turbo to slow down after 7-8 seconds, make that unlimited and it won't.

If your AIO can keep it cool, you got a free 10%+ at least on multi-core loads. Intel doesn't want people to do this with normal 125W air coolers, but I think the 100i is rated for 250W so you should be good.

Edit: Once I started tweaking things, it's been hard to stop. I've moved on to RAM sub timings. I think I got another 5% from about 3 days of tweaking that..

#8 in the world for a 10400 sorted by CPU score.
